Yes in this case im a mage but ive entered the mine at level 6 as a militia and finished the quest (didnt kill any orcs) and then returned at level 14 and killed orcs fine, if you specialise into one thing then you have no problems, Ive finished the game plenty of times so this time around im only using magic nothing else and i havent had too much trouble so far. Every time ive finished the game ive been level 30, not sure what the average is for other people.

I haven't yet resorted to Marvin. I'm at level 11 and still in chapter 1. I don't know where I got the idea that I should be up to level 20 or so before the end of chapter 1, but it looks like I won't.

Like you, there are some creatures that are still too much for me. I intend to be a mage and I'm using bows. Because I just got a Dragomir's crossbow, I'm now building that skill. Regular bow is 30.

Worgs, shadowbeests and snappers are so tough. I did clean out the nest of snappers near the south gate by hitting and running, but I start off from fairly far from the beast (bow) and he/they are still nipping at my heels by the time I make my escape.

I've pretty well cleaned out the country side of the easier beasts. Sagitta's was a great help. I'd just run back to her and get healed. Luckily, most creatures stopped short of her hut. But I had to restore once after killing two worgs. Here I was cheering myself until I found the reason they were sitting by the roadside so docilely was that they were munching on Sekob's corpse. So I restored to prior to leading the worgs to his farm. I got those worgs anyway. I was mad at them by then.

I'm almost done with everything I can do without settling on a guild. But I really want to level up melee from 25 to 30 and crossbow to at least 30. I don't think there are that many LP available to me until then. Drat.

BTW, lighthouse bandits were fairly easy for my archer at level 10. I got one to follow as I ran like a nut, then went back and shot him with the bow up close - he had switched to sword. Then I found the second stuck in front of a tree making running motions with his feet but going nowhere. He didn't even turn around while I pelted him with arrows. At this point I went towrds the third and saved my game. He was right outside the lighthouse and very tough. He killed me. I restored, ran close and got a shot at him doing some damage, ran and saved. Then he killed me again. I restored to mid battle and when I went back again he was gone. I'm farily sure I didn't kill him. Maybe the game felt sorry for me after so many restores during a battle:) Jack went home and I got the points.

I've read hints about unlimited experience by casting skeletons or something like that. But there aren't that many gob skeleton scrolls around and I can barely kill them. I certainly can't kill the big guys.

Does anyone else have leveling up tips. I don't want to be paying double for combat skills as a mage if I can get them before I go there.

I may just start over in another profession, but not until I hear how other's are doing, working along my line. I'd do a search but I don't quite know what to search for. Any hints or advice are appreciated!

Generally speaking, I believe the only way(s) you can get thru this game without taking an extraordinarily long time or a single cheat, are if you are VERY familiar with Gothic I (probably played it many times) AND/OR are imbued with natural talent, and/or LOVE TO TRY and RELOAD over and over.

I played Gothic I one time. Loved it but am too old to replay games of this type when the next great game is on my doorstep.

I can appreciate the replay of certain sections of the game in order to figure out the natural progression, but I have limited patience.

I'm not the fastest shooter on the block, nor the proudest, so if I occasionally cheat to get past an insurmountable task, I admit I will and have done it.

That being said, I still LOVE the game! Maybe not in the purist form possible, but hey, I'm not a spright little 30-something dude playing Ultima 1-4 any more.

So, all that being said, I'm still marching around in Chap 3, not with as much trepidation as I once had, but quite a bit over-buffed to avoid the extra medication I'd need to to play the game without at least an occasional TAKI, etc. (and I don't mean Swampweed!)

Keep the game alive! It deserves far better players than me!

Me too. One time and too old. Probably older than you are:) And I wait eagerly for every new RPG to come out.

I did Marvin a bit in Gothic 1, but didn't really like doing that. Once I got a bit of experience I toughed it out on my own. But I don't think there's anything wrong with anyone playing a game in whatever way he or she enjoys it most. And if that means Marvin, great. I'm glad it's there. It gives me a great sense of security knowing it is there. I don't like playing against impossible odds, and Gothic 1 was almost impossible for me at the beginning.

I had a different problem with this game. I usually don't play a thief and don't steal in games unless I'm playing one. This game has just about forced me into the role. There are just too many things to be gotten by becoming a thief. So now I'm enjoying that too. But I won't lift the purse off the farmer's wife:)

And since the game forced me into being a thief, I did it royally. I snuck into the Monastery and ripped off a number of gold chests. That got me some super fire ball spells and Elixer of Dex! In turn, those spells just helped me kill a mine crawler warrior and get another great chest of booty.

Lord Hagen gave me a key and he wants proofs that i can only find in the valley of mines....
But the problem is that i don't find the entrance of the valley near Bengar's farm...

can somebody help me ?

Start from the farm, head down the path, look for two paladins near a small bridge, that's it.

Step through the door and follow the path until you reach a point where you can decide either to stay on the broad path (and meet a dozen of orcs) or to turn left and follow a more narrow way which leads to an old tunnel (where you'll encounter nothing but a few rats).

Choose the latter and turn left. After the tunnel you'll have to cross a stone bridge and enter a second tunnel. Therein the "new world" map will load.
After leaving the tunnel head downhill (left) until you reach the river. Swim to the isle in middle of the river and fight your way through the lurkers.
Optional you may cross the river completely and fight your way through the orcs, too, but I'd emphatically suggest the first option.
When you've reached the end of the isle, swimming to the other waterside in inevitable, though. But at least you've evaded several orc-squads.

Then traverse the forest before you (which east of the fortress) and run to the orc-camps south of the fortress, where you have to find the orcish siege-ram. When you've located the ram, ascend it - and do all this quick, because otherwise an angry bunch of orcs will hack you into pieces.

Owww, of course, the orc-ram is on the east side of the fortress... sorry about that...
