Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion - More Coverage |
|
We've already linked to a fresh Oblivion preview at GamingTrend but a <a href="http://www.gamingtrend.com/Articles/articles.php?artID=132&pg=1" target="_blank">second</a> has been posted from a different author and focusing on the Xbox 360 version. My sense is that many previewers are coming away with their own preconceptions confirmed:<blockquote><em>Personally, I felt that the Xbox 360 was the better version of the two. While the PC version has the ability for mods later, the Xbox 360 framerate was much smoother than the PC version. The PC's we used had a top of the line video card, so if these machines had issues running the game smoothly, you'll have to turn off some features to get a smooth framerate on systems with older video cards. While you might be able to run Oblivion on older video cards, I speculate that this could be like saying that you can run Strike Commander on a 386. It runs, but you have to turn off a lot of the special effects, and it won’t look like the pictures on the box.
<br>
<br>The controls on the Xbox 360 just seemed more streamlined and smooth compared to the PC version. For instance, I never had any issues casting a spell on the Xbox 360 version. Unfortunately, trying to hit the C button on the PC seemed clumsy. Hitting the space bar to activate an object was counter-intuitive to using the left mouse button. The control was more natural on the Xbox 360 controller. I’m certain that getting used to the control on the PC shouldn’t be that great of an issue though, especially for fans of PC shooters.</em></blockquote>Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.gamingsteve.com/" target="_blank">Gaming Steve</a> has a new podcast with a fair chunk of the 122 minute (!) audiocast dedicated to Oblivion (<a href="http://www.gamingsteve.com/podcasts/Gaming-Steve-2006-02-27.mp3" target="_blank">direct link, Oblivion coverage starts at 32:22 minutes</a>).
<br>
<br>Finally, the Elder Scrolls site has an updated list of <a href="http://www.elderscrolls.com/links/links_previews.htm" target="_blank">previews</a> and <a href="http://www.elderscrolls.com/links/links_interviews.htm" target="_blank">interviews</a> - we have covered all of these separately to my knowledge but if you are desperate for all the Oblivion you can get, you might want to look through the links. |

Just to let anyone know when it comes to previews saying the frame rate isn't as good on the pc as on the 360 they don't know that they are having frame rate problems with ati cards and from what I have seen they are using ati x19000 video cards so it would have a slower frame rate. A developer mentioned that not too long ago. |

Interesting piece of info. I've alwas had nVidia cards in my computer, and I'M planning to upgrade it for Oblivion. As GF 6800GTs are virtually out of stock here (dunno why ), I was pondering buying an X800XT instead, which is said to be in par with the 6800GT in terms of performance. However, now I'm sure I won't. Better to start some real serious saving and get a 7800GT instead. _________________ Don't work too much; it could interfere with your drinking. |

What's the "top of the line video card" they are using?
GameSpot reported PC version is as smooth as Xbox 360. |

speaking about slower framerates without telling anything about the PC system (a high-end graphic card...), at wich res they were playing, wich settings theyr' using. Nonsense, or worst : BS with subliminal message "buy an xbox"
also, feeling the controls aren't intuitive for the PC version...it's just a way to make us understand that Oblivion is obviously designed for console, and the PC version is just a carbon copy of the console one. Maybe, they want us to plug a xb360 pad into our PC...
think about Deus Ex 2, Thief or KOTOR, and their poor, ugly and badly designed interface....but suit wonderfully the console counterpart. Oblivion will follow the same and pitiful way. |

go for 7800GT, i just did from 9800pro. x800 will be a waste because there is no sm3. which will be a nice feature in OB |

Oh, fie! I got an AGP X800XT a few months ago, I'm damned if I'm gonna fork out more money so soon for another card.
I presume when they talk about "top of the line" cards they mean PCI-E nowadays?
Oh well, I shall just have to tone it down a little then. No biggie, as always it's more about the quests and gameplay than the graphics. _________________ Chonky big tim-tam Australian so-so. |

Yeah, I will, albeit it's rather costly, I'm afraid. And I also need to replace my current non-PCI-E motherboard and upgrade the CPU as well. *sigh* But at least once I'm over it, I won't upgrade for another 2-3 years or so.
The primary reason why I opt against the X800Xt - or any other ATi cards, as a matter of fact - , is that most games support nVidia cards (also, I've always had NV cards and they're fine by me), which in turn means that you get slower framerates/accidental glitches/you-name-what with ATi cards.
I only hope I can scrape together enoguh money for my upgrade prior to the game's release.
Edit: p.s. I seem to s**k at quoting _________________ Don't work too much; it could interfere with your drinking. |

its ok r3dshift .
well with new generation they mean ofcourse SM3 instead of SM2 effects.
x800 is quite a good card even for oblivion .
i just wanted to get SM3 effect because the look awesome!. since only the x1600/1800/1900 from ati has SM3 you can buy a x1600 or x1800 if you prefer ati (which i also do, but 7800gt was so cheap i couldnt resist ). |

Well, yeah, a 7800GT costs like 2/3 of an X1xxx ATi here as well, but even that is way too expensive for me - more than half a month's wage!
Anyhow, I'm looking forward to saving up the money and running the game on the new config _________________ Don't work too much; it could interfere with your drinking. |

If you'd stop being impressed with yourself for just a minute or two, maybe you'd read something iother than that one preview.
The PC version has a completely different interface, very similar to the one in Morrowind, but with better inventory sorting. |
