I'm begining to lose it, folks!

Game in focus: Gothic 2

Reason for "losing it": I just lost a whole day of gameplay, seeing
how two different saved games are corrupted, and the only game that
functions is from two days ago (not game-time - real-time!!)

Possible ways of retaliation: A. jump out the window, without
bothering to open it first; B. throw a chair at spouse; C. ask someone
to have me committed; or D. try to get help from the newsgroups.

Interim conclusions: since actions A thru C did not achieve satisfying
results, moving on to plan D - I NEED HELP!!!!!

my specs:
XP Pro + SP1
Gigabyte 7DXR
Athlon 1.33
384MB RAM
Radeon 9500Pro
ATA100 Maxtor HD

Besides that sodding saved game issue, I get the occasional crash
(occasional = once every couple of hours).

please please please advise.

thanks, and may God help us all against buggy releases (and it's
already patched to 1.31, in the name of all that is good and
honorable!)

well just as a reference, here's my machine:
P4 2.5
1GB DDR2 RAM
GeForce 4 Ti 4600

So I load up gothic throw with what I thought was a powerful machine, throw all the texture and details, everything...full blast.
And life was good until I got to town...and to this day I still have to hit f2 whenever I teleport back to Khorinis.

I think your machine is way underpowered but you can try the F1-4 keys, they help me alot in certain situations (towns, fights) they are pre-set graphic templates that you can switch to on the fly
F1 is like minimal(towns/crowded areas) F4 is full blast (open areas, etc)

thanks - I got a question about this F1-F4 thing

thanks..

I was wondering:
Why didn't I see anything about it in the manual?

Also, does anyone have a full description of what exactly each state does? when I press F3 (which works fine in outdoors), what exactly is configured, other than visual/object range? does it change some extended features as well or something like that?

And above all - where can I get information about each and every setting in the INI file? I play around with it quite a lot, and helps me a bunch!

thanks again..

The F1-F4 shortcuts were added with patch 1.30. The manual looks like a simple translation of the German book.

F(n) sets the viewing distance to (80%, 120%, 200%, 300%). Other settings are certainly also affected. Just compare the adjustments in the options menu.
I read you can even force 400% view if you edit the keys in the gothic.ini.

I have had some crashing generally quite alot i've also lost a few save games which got me
now i am playing a level 14 mercenary and i use 2 saves as a backup i don't want to risk loseing another save again, framerate rise everything is smooth until city i have object and view distance to 270% as i said all fine except city about 15 fps.

I've also had alot of crashing evn thou my machine is overclocked no other game crashs no were near as much as gothic 2. However i have found a solution for me, if i turn my heatsink fan up to about 4000 rpms the game runs very well no crashing i assume it must be heat the game is cpu intensive??

It´s exactly that. See it realistic, the Volcano Xaser is only a mediocre heatsink. You should have bought the biggest Thermalright available for your oc´ed system.

More than any other game I'm aware of. One could use Gothic II as CPU/RAM benchmark

Yeah from what i've seen that city pushes any system even my bro's 9700 pro only gets about 15 - 20 fps but he have 300% detail

Gorath yeah the xaser isn't any thing special i should have spent more on my hsf can you reccommend a one for gothic 2 (^_^) a good one that's quiet to.

If i don't run 4000rpms now my gothic 2 screams lol. it steels all my precious cpu cycles but i love the game so far. i want to play the first them orcs are hard

The best heatsink you can buy right now is the Thermalright SLK-900U. It can be combined with fans up to 92mm size. But be careful, Thermalright fans are BIG, complicated to install and the price reflects their current market position in the hardcore segement.
The older models (SLK-800 and 700) are also pretty good. Read some reviews before you buy. Especially important is if these things fit on your m/b and in your case.

A small correction. Of course I meant Thermalright heatsinks are big, etc.
The 900U is fastened with 4 screws through the m/b, so you have to make sure you have the needed 4 holes and you have to remove the m/b to attach the sink.

Such expensive combos are only necessary if you want to heavily overclock the CPU. Even cheap solutions like Arctic Cooling Copper Silent for 8 EUR are good enough for cooling a non-oc´ed ~XP2500+.
It´s possible your problems go away if you apply the correct amount of a good thermal paste and add one or two case fans.

hmm i've looked at the overclocker.co.uk website and they say that for my board the asus a7n8x deluxe that the thermal take 900 seris is so big i'd have to bend the capacitors on the board to fit it on which i don't want to do i'l look at the other thermal take seris see if i can get a slightly smaller one.

i am already using as3 on my medicore xaser 11 it dose the job for now. the funny thing is i actually found my old volcano 7 to cool better than this xaser 11 ever did.

back to my framerate when in forest or out of town i was getting around 60 fps - 80fps using the built in framerate frate. but only the city it drops to around 25fps.

i have 2 anti alising and 16 af enabled for my radeon. this is good but am i right in thinking you would need some kind of super computer at 4 gig to run the town at least 60fps at 300% detail ?

Another hardware tip…All fans have one major flaw…they only dissipate heat from the core ignoring the die altogether. If you don’t believe me, take your CPU’s temperature using an infrared thermometer. The solution I found for this problem in a neat little copper spacer that fits on top of the ceramic processor die (don’t spare the quicksilver). You can find them at most sites selling CPU fans for around $10. One of the best $10 purchases I’ve ever made.

P.S. some water coolers have this problem also…
