SWG: Space Expansion Species Info |
|
Haden "Shug_Ninx" Blackman, Lucas Arts Producer for 'Star Wars: Galaxies' has posted some interesting information regarding future playable species to the official forums. They'll put up a poll tomorrow, asking for your favorites.
The new species will then be introduced with the space expansion pack.

Here's an excerpt from Shug's post:
Tomorrow, Q-3PO is going to post a new poll asking you for your first choice of species for the Space Expansion. After going through all your nominations (and some of our own), we came up with our short list. Here, I'll explain some of our rationale...
-Any new species have to be humanoid. That means, they need to be bipedal and basically human in shape and size. This allows us to reuse animations and reduces the amount of work we need to do to make wearables usable by the species. It also doesn't limit the type of armor, etc. that the species can wear. Unfortunately, this qualification ruled out species like the Ithorians (Hammerhead) or the Hutts. Beyond that, it's nice if the species has normal hands and feet, etc.

-No continuity restrictions. There are a few species, like the Noghri or the Yuzzhan Vong, that have continuity issues (i.e., they haven't been discovered or are in hiding or whatever). Some species, like the Weequay, have really strange continuity issue (the Weequay only talk to one another) that would make including them difficult from a design standpoint.

-Plenty of customization options. There were a few species, like the Bith, that we felt were too limited in terms of customization. We don't want all characters to look alike, regardless of species.

-Offers something new, either in size, basic "texture" (i.e., scales vs. fur vs. flesh) or customization options.

-Is recognizably Star Wars, preferably from the films.
|

Am I the only person who finds it utterly ridiculous to discuss a games expansion before the the actual game is released?
Does anyone else realize that from the official announcement of World of Warcraft and its release date, roughly 3 years will have passed?
Can a marketing wiz please explain the rationale? (If one exists...) |

I think that they want to get the publics opinion on this, so while the first game is not out, they are working on the expansion. At least, they are getting all the design ideas of the expansion down now.
Why they wouldn't wait for the first game to come out to even worry about the expansion is beyond me. Personally, I am getting real tired of following games for 3 years and then watching the release date slip and slip and slip.
I find myself not paying attention to game development that much anymore. I'd rather my time was spent doing other things. Basically, I'm just tired of getting jerked along.
I guess that now I no longer kid myself when a developer says a game will be out, now I add on at least 6 months to the date, and usually even that is wrong. Especially early in development. If a game has just been recently announced, I will add on 1 year to the date that they say it will be released, and even this is usually too soon. |

I completely agree with both of you. I know nothing about marketing but this is the only reason I can think of that makes any sense for what they do. Maybe they figure that by the time a game is hyped for 2 or 3 years, everyone will know about it when it comes out and be eager to buy it. I have no idea whether or not this works for them, and surely it must backfire sometimes but its the only explaination I can think of. Believe me, I'm not trying to justify it because I find it extremely annoying. |

Relax, people . I'm not a fanboy. The game will have to prove itself worthy to me as well once it is released BUT isn't it great that they are actually considering the overall concept already?
Don't get me wrong but people like you just never seem to be satisfied (excluding "Essential" from that statement). If they wouldn't be talking about the space expansion (SE) yet, you'd probably accuse them of secret cancellation of the expansion pack, of ignoring the community, of too much focusing on the original game instead of taking care of the SE while interstellar travel is an essential part of 'Star Wars' etc.
I very much appreciate that they seem to be always looking at the "full picture". SWG is probably the most professional MMORPG approach in the history of MMORPGs. Let's wait&see. I don't see nothing wrong with discussing the SE at this point in time . |

I know I got sidetracked from the orginal post but I do get worked up about years of hype before a game is finally released. I do also get sort of annoyed about talk of expansions before the game even comes out, especially when the main features were hyped early on as part of the regular game, but I was mainly going on about the huge gaps between announcing and releasing and the unrealistic release dates given. I can see why you might think I was someone who is never satisfied but thats not the case.
If they were not talking about the space expansion I wouldn't be complaining about it. In fact I probably wouldn't even know because I hardly follow SWG (for pretty much the same reason Essential said he doesn't follow game development). I just saw a couple of people talking about a subject that annoys me and was agreeing with them that yes its annoying. |
