preparing for morrowind?

I've been reading many posts on the morrowind forums of top end pc's which are having framerate problems running Morrowind and because I have a medium system I was wondering what I could do to make my system run faster...im not sure about overclocking my gcard because I tried it once before and my system wouldnt boot up.
Anyways, heres my system specs...

P4 1.7 (DELL)
256mb RDRAM (PC800)
Generic gforce3 64mb
40 gig 7200 HD
hercules game theater XP soundcard (I also have a spare sblaster live card..should I leave the hercules in?)
Windows 98 (also have windows ME somewhere, which should I use for morrowind?)

It should be good.

Just install on defragmented or formated disk, turn all backgrounds program off and use hack that will disable safedisk (they say it helps a lot) and you should enjoy it on very good details.
