That's what I thought too. My computer can run the game perfectly on the highest detail level with no slowup, and here I go to this blasted level and I can't run on the lowest. It took me like 3 hours to finish it because of that.

Try to put the 'shadow detail' (can't remember the exact name of this setting) to 0. It made a big difference for me: 1 or 2 fps (maybe less) with shadows on, > 30 when off (ATI Radeon 9700).
