Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion - Retail First Impressions @ PC.IG |
|
IGN is the first site we've seen to get some Oblivion retail first impressions up. The article opens with some PC thoughts and moves on to the Xbox 360. Here's the opening:
It was with great fervor that I picked up the collector's edition of Daggerfall some ten years ago now, and the seductive appeal of the Elder Scrolls series hasn't dissipated since, despite the bugs and long development times. It's surreal sometimes to look back upon those days before I became an editor, and now here I am looking at a cherished franchise as both an RPG gamer and an industry observer. I've been looking forward to ES4 more than any game since Half-Life 2 -- and that's a lot of games to wade through in the mean time. But it's finally on our desks, in our computers, and inside our heads, and we're here to give you a taste before Bethesda and 2K Games unleash Oblivion on the retail channel for both the PC and the 360. I'm the PC jerk today.
|

So it begins :]. It will be long day reading all those previews, first impressions and probably even reviews? Some are really fast in giving their final conclussions (reviews and scores) mainly when they expect it will bring them some significant traffic boost :]. |

Let me just echo IGN's comments on the interface. Must we endure console interfaces forever more? _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |

My secret birthday wish: a hack that would allow a third person perspective.
Then I would be all over this game. |

Yes thank god. I saw a brief clip of a melee character in armour fighting 3rd person somewhere. It looked great, the camera was at a 10ft level or thereabouts. I played Morrowind 3rd person too. I just can't swing a sword in first person for some reason - the depth perception gets muddled up close I think, making my expectation of hit detection too ambiguous.
Plus the peripheral vision restriction in first person always bothered me.
On the other hand, in Morrowind if I was using a bow or ranged spells I switched to first person. _________________ "For Innos!" |

I'm sure the entire gaming press industry is tripping over each other to get their reviews out.
Too bad early reviews of games as large as Oblivion are fairly worthless. _________________ The Poster Previously Known As NeptiOfPovar |

Then Happy Birthday to me!
Actually, I'm expecting my first child any time now. Hope it doesn't cut into my game time... |

Problem is...when THEY sleep, YOU sleep. It's a tiring exercise, trust me. |

Listen listen. I'm a xpert!!! LOL
Newborns sleep like 21-22 hours a day.
You only sleep when they sleep at NIGHT. During the day they sleep all day and you game with coffee.
I've got 2, that's the way it was for me at least. _________________ "For Innos!" |

I have two as well. The thing is, after getting only 3 hours sleep at night, one loses one's edge during twitchy games. (He types, circles under his eyes, an empty, toppled coffee cup trickling brown drops off his desk.)
EDIT: On second thought, considering how slow Oblivion is likely to run on my computer, perhaps my sleep deprivation won't be much of a handicap after all. _________________ For each toon kills the mob he 'groes, yet each toon does not die. |

You're a guy, right? That explains it.
