Value of Collectors' Editions

I was curious as to what the general consensus is regarding the value of "Collectors Editions" of CRPGS.

Here is my situation: I never got around to picking up Icewind Dale II and I wanted to play it, so I looked on e-bay and found a good deal for it.

When I received it, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was the Collectors' Edition and it was still factory sealed, never opened.

I'm not really a collector and just wanted to play the game, but am now wondering whether I stumbled onto something which might be valuable in time. Should I hold on to this collectors edition, unopened, and find another cheap copy of the regular version of the game to play? Or would that be a waste of money? Should I just open up the collectors' edition and play with that?

Thanks for any advice.

In my opinion Collectors Editions really are not worth anything in the long run. Most just seem to be an add-on in addition to the regular game, or a game may come with a cloth map in the CE and not the normal release, or you might get a little pewter figurine. Seems alot of companies are doing that now (Pools of Radiance, Wizards and Warriors, etc). I really dont think there is a rise in value, unless its a really old, classic series, like maybe an Ultima or something.

i would be very surprised if they will be worth anything in the long run, i've not heard of any computer game box collectors, although i guess there must be some, the world is a weird and wonderful place

A game´s value is rather determined by the game itself, not by box and gimmicks. If you have decent game in mint condition which sells for 10$ on ebay I would estimate the collector´s edition sells for 15-20$.
Classics like the old Ultimas (1-3) are worth hundreds of $ if the game is complete and in an acceptable condition. And still some 10 $ incomplete or damaged.

I am a collector. For me the 5-10$ more on ebay are worth it. If the game makes it in my collection I´m happy, if not I´ll get my money back when I sell it.
From my perspective games without box are worthless and games in DVD boxes aren´t worth much because they look too unspectacular on my shelf.
