Help! Got Gothic Installed But Can't Play! :(

I just installed Gothic (the first game) without a hitch, but when I click on the icon on my desktop to play it, or go through the programs menu to play it, I keep on getting the same error which is the following...

(first error message)
C:\ProgramFiles\Piranha-Bytes\Gothic\system\gothic.exe
A device attached to the system is not functioning

(second error message)
The GOTHIC.EXE file is linked to missing export
DDRAW.DLL:DirectDrawCreateEx.

I'm trying to play this on a Windows 98 system with plenty of memory, so I'm not sure what is causing the problem. If anyone has any idea what's causing this please reply and let me know! I'll really appreciate it!

This is a DirectX error. Install the patch and try again. If it doesnīt work reinstall DirectX8.1.

Yeah, itīs a great game. Surprising till the end. I almost cried when Gorath sacrificed himself in the showdown.

Is your problem solved?

Yeah I was sad when Goroth had to die too Such a great game though, awesome story-line.

I got the game to work and load properly now, but now I have ANOTHER problem! When I get to the part when the main character talks to Diego, parts of the foreground start disappearing. It's almost like foreground pieces are being cutout and the background sky is showing through, as I walk around after talking to Diego, the cut out portions get larger, it's VERY strange! I wonder if this is a problem with the videocard or what? Have you heard of anything like this? It's a little hard trying to play the game when portions of the scenery are cut out.

Sounds like a driver issue. Try to disable fog in the gothic.ini. There is only one such option. This can slow down the game a bit, but thatīs a secondary problem.

What graphics card do you have?

Ok my father put this computer together for my older sister so I'm honestly not too sure what video card he has on this, and I've become so accustomed to using my macintosh at work that I've completely forgotten how you check what devices your PC has installed I know I know I'm a disgrace.

I went to the control panel and clicked on System and under "Sound, Video and Game Controllers was listed... Gameport Joystick, MPU-401 Compatible, SiS 7018 Audio Driver, and Wave Device for Voice Modem.

If there's anything else I need to look up you'll have to tell me where to go, it's been too long since I've tried to do any technical stuff with a pc

Hmmm... I just tried disabling the fog in the gothic.ini file and it didn't help the cutout problem at all, it's still happening. It looks very strange!

Correct page, wrong line. Try 'graphics adaptor' (or something like that) somewhere in the middle.

Okay, then itīs a driver issue. You need new graphics drivers.

Aargh! Thatīs incredibly slow.
However, Iīve seen people run Gothic on cards worse than yours. So after a driver update it should run flawlessly. But donīt expect it to be fast.

Upgrade driver or upgrade graphics card?

How fast is your cpu, how much RAM do you have and does your mainboard have an AGP slot?

Erm... nevermind about all that, I'll just try to fumble through it myself and if I can't get it to work properly I can't get it to work properly *shrugs* I'm just a non-computer expert who wants to play a game is all Thanks for all your help!
