Jagged Alliance 3D: Interview @ CRPG.ru

Thanks to CRPG.ru for letting us know about an interview they have with Yaroslav Astakhov from MiSTland South to talk about 'Jagged Alliance 3D'. Here's an excerpt:
CRPG.ru: The first news about the game were confusing. There was something about JA2UB remake, then it was “not the story, but the scale of events”, then suddenly it’s a brand new game. So, what’s the final version? What’s the plot, the main hero role, game factions?

MiST land–South: We didn’t promise a remake. It was about the scale of events, although in the end we put JA2UB completely away. It was the worst game in the series, and we didn’t want to repeat its mistakes.

MiST land–South: The game takes place in some African country. After political upturn dictator rules the land, but situation slowly turns into chaos. There are many factions: farmers that are trying to retake their lands, marauders, ex-government and UN contingent, fighting each other and dictator’s forces. The player must choose his side of conflict, and this choice will affect starting position, storyline, balance of powers and possible ending of the game.
I love the bit at the very end about them being sick of people confusing JA3D and JA3...

MiST land–South: The current status is pre-alpha, and release is planned for Q3 2005.

This game is in Pre-alpha, and headed for a Q3 release...
Without even taking into account the Publisher or Developers past records that pretty much tells me all I need to know about this project.

Thanks for the heads up, I don't need any more examples on my shelf of "how not to make a game".

That's aside from the fact that what the fanbase has been clamoring for is a true sequel, not a 3D aberration of a turn-based gem.

CRPG.ru: Any additional info you might share?

MiST land–South: We are primarily focusing on story. We want to create the best storyline in our career. Even the Power of Law with its non-linear structure will fail in comparison. Several starting positions, several endings – all this will provide extreme replayability. And the game should have its own name. We are tired of people that don’t understand the difference between Jagged Alliance 3D and Jagged Alliance 3.

I sincerely hope the Power of Law fails in comparison. Story is definitely important however it's not the only component in a well executed game. While the branching storyline in Power of Law might have been one of its few saving graces, the horrid translation and equally bad voice acting ruined any attempt at salvation. The Power of Law pretty much failed on all accounts, as many gamers and reviews can attest to.

Put your arrogance aside; you may be tired of us poor peons who didn't untill now understand the difference between the two projects, but don't lay your shortcomings at our feet. Perhaps if Strategy First, Game Factory Interactive, or Mist land-South, had stepped forward at anytime over the course of the last several months and responded to questions from the JA fanbase or set the record straight, there would be nor never have been, any misunderstanding of the difference between JA3D and JA3.

Caveat emptor...
