Gothic 2 is no RPG

In the JoWood site, it classes Gothic 2 as 'adventure' game, while Arx Fatalis as 'RPG'.

Eh? What gives?

I would have classified Gothic (the first one) as an action/adventure/RPG hybrid, so I guess it depends on the beholder.

So what are the differences between Gothic and Arx that lets Arx go int the RPG category and Gothic in Adventure? Anyone know?

Gothic could be in many catagories. Action, adventure, rpg all at the same time. I think they goofed it up personally. never played or seen Arx Fatalis but I would think Gothic is definitely an RPG, with a nameless convict turned heroic hero type. Maybe they wanted to spread them out? Maybe someone who knows will slap a post on this thread...

It even says it on the box, An Epic Role Playing Adventure

hmm...
I have a feeling Gothic is/or should be an action/adventure game. If anyone here has played Morrowind as I have, you can really tell the difference (You have to have played it awhile though...)

Whatever they call Gothic 2 it still will be a great game.

Maybe it is a markething trick, it might be that if you call a game an advanture it sells better then an Rpg.

Your probably right, adventure covers a wider variety of games than rpg, though there are lots of rpgs out there. I don't care what they call it since I know the title of the prequel already(that helps in knowing game quality) I've already played Gothic and expect more of the same and of course the spiffy new additions. I would think everyone who has played Gothic will want to play Gothic II, why leave a story unended? Also, with more of the same type of title running around, it'll be bought more often...at least I think so. Most stores have larger adventure sections as well, though rpgs are somewhat starting to "take over the shelves" With things like Ever Quest, Wizardy 8, Gothic(of course) and others I've forgotten about being pumped out by various companies. Action, adventure, strategy, simulators, modern or futuristic type games usually sell more often than an rpg title. Hey I can mention something else too. Arthur's Knights contains *horses* and *shields* I was thinking that the Gothic crew might take a look at them, for grins.

Of course not for Gothic II, but if they ever feel like continuing this hero's adventures, they just might take a peek since I've read a lot of requests for shields, horses and other countless items to be integrated into the game. There's not a lot of fighting or nothin in AK, but some good concepts. No shame in a little knowledge gathering Not telling any of the Gothic crew what to do, I'm not that dumb of course, just hinting at some ideas.

Well, if they couldn't get you........they could get yer horse And maybe horses could carry inventory(which you'd have to rescue if the poor thing gets eaten.) Sorta like making the horse your "companion" If only to carry you round and eat grass

Besides, you'd have someone to constantly talk to with no backfire!

Odd they'd label it adventure. I think crpg's are selling much more than adventure games these days... even then I really don't mind what they label it as long as its good!

etc

Horses would be very bad (unless you can attack from one)
Some of the most amazing moments in Gothic took place during that run through the forest from the Old camp to the Swamp camp. Watching the AI of the the hunt and prey between the wolves and the molerats and the molerats and the wasps made my jaw drop.
Not to mention trying to find just the right perch spot to use your bow from...
damn just thinking about it is making me want to play again

Well, Erb, the answer to your original question is: it was an error.

I talked to the JoWooD PR team today, they were duly shocked and the error will be corrected. Gothic II is an RPG.
