What is an MMORPG, check out the current and coming titles

What does MMORPG stand for?

The letters form up a phrase "Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game". These games can only be played on the Internet. As the name suggest Massively Multiplayer games are played with thousands of other human players in a (usually) big persistent virtual world. Here is a definition from AC2: What is an MMORPG? .

I'll update this thread to have some information about MMORPGs and also to have links to the currently running and also new not yet finished games.

To check few of the currently running ones, look for these:

Anarchy Online (Funcom)
Asheron's Call (Microsoft / Turbine)
Dark Age of Camelot (Mythic Entertainment) Camelot herald, official news page
Darkspace
Elkardian (Codinet)
Everquest (Sony)
Lineage
Ultima Online

There are many new MMORPGs coming too. Few highlights (In alphabetical order), the item in () is Publisher / Developer:

A Tale in the Desert (EGenesis)
Ages of Arithia
Arcanity
Asheron's Call 2 Turbine / Microsoft)
Atriarch - Betatest link here
Black Moon Chronicles - Winds of War (Vircom / Cryonetworks)
City of Heroes (NC Soft / Cryptic Studios)
Darkfall Online
Destiny Online
Dominus Online
Dragon Empires (Codemasters)
EVE: The Second Genesis
Earth and Beyond (Westwood)
Everquest II (Sony)
Face of Mankind
FaitH
Gladius Online
Horizons (Artifact Entertainment)
Imperator Online (Mythic Entertainment)
Iritor Online
Lineage 2 (NCSoft)
Metallurgy
Mimesis Online (Tannhauser Gate)
Myth of Soma (Game Network)
Neocron
Nexus: Kindom of the Winds
Phantasy Star Online (Sega)
Priest (JCEntertainment)
Project Entropia (MindArk)
Ragnarok Online (Gravity)
Realms of Torment (Quad Software)
Shadowbane (Ubisoft)
Star Wars Galaxies (Sony)
Tabula Rasa (NCSoft / Destination Games)
The Legend of Mir
The Path to Zenrai
The Zaga of Ryzom
Trials of Ascension (Shadowpool studios)
Underlight (Lyra Studios)
Warhammer Online (Games Workshop / Climax)
World of Pirates (WOP-DevTeam)
World of Warcraft (Blizzard)

The list above proabably is not 100% accurate and games are missing. If you have something to add to this or want me to correct a mistake. Send me a PM or reply in this thread.

The list above is by no means a complete list. For more complete list go to the Multiplayer Online Gaming Directory. I'll update this list from time to time.

Edit: Added The Path to Zenrai, thanks Arhu. Definitely looking *spiffy*

Why not sort the upcoming ones in alphabetical order? So, if someone is actually looking for link, they can find it easier.

Also, if you gonna put EVE into the upcoming, then you should put DarkSpace into the currently existing ones.

A games search at RPGDot brings up 42 MMORPG's. I'm sure there are more in the making or have been made.

I've played A Tale in the Desert a while back and I liked that very much. It only has roleplaying and no combat. It's still in open beta.

I've also played Fighting Legends, Redmoon and Lineage, because I had to review them. They were not bad when you are expecting a level-up tredmill.

A game I was really looking forward to is Midgard, but it might be cancelled.... or not....

Here are some to complete your list:
A Tale in the Desert
Black Moon Chronicles
City of Heroes
Dominus Online
Face of Mankind
FaitH
Gladius Online
Horizons
Lineage 2
Midgard
Mimesis Online
Myth of Soma
Nexus: Kindom of the Winds
Phantasy Star Online
Priest
Project Entropia
Ragnarok
Realms of Torment
Tabula Rasa
The Legend of Mir
Trials of Ascension
Underlight
Warhammer Online
World of Pirates

I'll try to keep this thread updated but I think my original idea was not to even try listing all of the MMORPGs. But now that there is a more comprehensive list available, why not then

Keep me posted

Now most things should be in place. All games in the list have links to their site. I bet something is missing though

Added Arhu's suggestion

I also added a new "The Saga of Ryzom". This one seems pretty interesting, they are releasing the whole MMOG engine as a OPEN SOURCE under GPL.

We will see what happens.

I don't know if you care too much, but I've seen that for some mmorpgs you added the company that made them and for some you didn't.

I'll list some of the mmorpgs that I know which company makes them in case you want to complete the list

EVE: The Second Genesis (CCP)

Neocron (REAKKTOR)

Darkfall Online (Razorwax)

The Legend of Mir (Game Masters) - I didn't try this game but from what I see in the forums people are paying for it already and they say in the news about crediting about 10 free game play days because of server rollback so it seems to me like it has gone comercial already. Strange !

Necron went Retail in Germany couple of weeks ago and will go Retail in the rest of the world in about a month or so. So maybe you wanna upgrade its status to Current MMOGs.

I just got an email from Westwood saying that Earth and Beyond will be out in two weeks. (If you preorder now you get into the beta test and able to get into something called the Federation which is a special class of player.) Just because I dont like the game and dont plan on playing it doesnt mean it shouldnt be updated on your list, hehe, because many people do enjoy it I have gathered.
