Thief archetype and MMORPGs

Are there any MMORPGs - current or under development - that any of you can recommend for playing a thief character ?

Although an integral part of the Fantasy genre, thieves seem to have been consistently overlooked in MMORPGs.

Is there a game out there that hasn`t ruined the thief class ? I`m looking for a game where I can steal from other characters, burgle buildings, rob stagecoaches and then suffer any in-game repercussions. Is there a MMORPG in which the developers have clearly thought about crime and punishment and effectively implemented the thief profession ?

Regards,
Steerpike

Sorry Steerpike but game developers don't let people roleplay anything they want anymore. I can remember UO (Ultima Online) used to have theives and I hated them. But it made it that much more fun. UO mostly relied on player justice though. But it is pretty good you can pickpocket people but can't stealth (move while hidden) at least I don't remember you can. All other current games I've played don't allow for theives...I don't know if Shadowbane did allow it though.

If you can stomach the game, Shadowbane offers some of the things you're looking for, as others have mentioned already.

But, if you're looking for a game that I can recommend, then no there is none, because I wouldn't recommend Shadowbane to anyone at all...

I really enjoy the thief class as well, but every game has either nerfed them or made it a token class... except one, the original Ultima Online. Now if only there were a pre UO:R server somewhere out there *cough*

Thief

As stated previously I didn't find Shadowbane worth the investment of time or money they did have the thief class pretty well done. There was a thief that wrote several stories on the boards (don't remember his name ) that were very well done. He would list his most recent exploits as a thief in character and was a wonderfull storyteller. I think I enjoyed his story telling of his coniveing thievery better than the actual game. I looked foward to each new tale with enthusiasm.
The other games that I thought had the rogue class with stealing implemented were Gemstone 3 and Dragonrealms. Although they were text games the rogue classes were really well done and quite immersive. I look foward to a graphical MMORPG implementing the class. Obviously it would need to be PvP as there needs to be consequences for thievery poorly done....heh.
The other game currently in beta that has a rouge class albeit not fully implemented is Wish.
I find it surprising that developers have passed up the opportunity to bring this class of character to full bloom as it is very popular and sorely missing from most projects.

50,000, where did you get that number? For instance the darkfall forums have only 4,000 users.

I think Ammon was just exagerating to prove a point: there are many people out there that are asking the same question.

Well you miss counted because I accout for 22,999 people myself and Ammon counts for 23,001 people by his lonesome. So that roughly equates to 50,000 people eagerly awaiting DF.
