DarkSpace: Game Staff Consents to Rape @ Official Forums

It's an all-too-common reality in the seedy cyberscape of the modern MMOG; the flippant use of the word 'rape' to describe what happens to players who are severely outnumbered or outclassed. The DarkSpace staff has struggled for some time with the word and even completely banned its use in-game or on the forums. The banning, trivial though it may seem in the scheme of things, caused so much outrage and confusion that the staff has decided to allow players to say it, as long as they adhere to some usage guidelines.

Many gamers and gaming communities have clashed over the past few years over increasing use of the word "rape" in their chat rooms, servers, and forums.

Thanks to its multiple meanings and interpretations, some voice deep offense to its very utterance and take their fight to the forums, while others steadfastly, and somewhat beligerantly, defend its usage of it in what they consider "harmless" ways. These are the two typical sides of the issue.

In response, more than a year ago, the exact date of which is unknown due to the records being lost, the staff adopted a policy of forbidding the word in its entirity due to its potentially offensive nature.

As many of you are aware, this zero-tolerance policy has been the cause of a few rather heated debates and flame wars over the past few weeks. During this period, it became apparent that the policy's nature as an absolute enforcement of a word that is contextually used... was problematic. Therefore, this was the first matter discussed at last Sunday's meeting.

Our decision was to repeal the absolute ban on the usage of the word "rape", and we agreed that the word is henceforth to be moderated based on the way in which it is used.

Well that's one game I can now happily ignore.

What a crass decision. I'm not sure which it says more about, the judgement of the moderators or the immaturity of the posters who campaigned for the word to be admitted.

Either way, it's not a game I'll have anything to do with.

The fact is that the word's usage varies situation to situation, and it is our job as moderators to decide when to act and when not to. Because "rape" is not vulgar by definition and is only offensive by context, there is no justification for having a rule set against it as if it were absolutely vulgar. It is not.

And these guys are obviously fairly brainless idiots (pretty sure you can find a "non-vulgar, and only offensive in context" definition for "brainless idiots" if you're searching really hard).

Again, another worthless non-issue for people who have for too much time on their hands to even waste a minute of it obsessing over

Get the facts right before you post something, those are game moderators that decided to but a ban on that word because TWO players MellyMoo and Tarnekep took offense to it. People still use that word in DS..

Before you tell us to "get our facts right", try re-reading our newsbit.

"...the staff has decided to allow players to say it, as long as they adhere to some usage guidelines..."
