FAQ Thread - Low Level Tactics

I am currently into chapter 2, bashing orcs, will take me a couple of days to beat the game myself, but I feel like it is time to rise a few questions for the upcoming F.A.Q.

To start with, Id like a thread that adresses low level tactics. This means:
a) It should help a low level (level 1?) character to beef up
b) It should be free, or cheap, accessible at a really low level
c) It should preferably not require to spend xp (to be able to save).

As examples, in Gothic 1 you could find alot of decent items that helped you in the start, if you knew where to find them. The dex bonus ring, the bonearrow, the orc hammer, diggers dress. All accessible at a really low level, and defenitly proved a difference to the capacity of a low level character.

Here are a few:
1) Behind a tree in the beginning there is a free Shortbow and a bunch of arrows. This bow can be used with just 10 dexterity.
2) On the road to the Mercenary Camp, there is a Wolf Tooth that can be used with just 10 strength.
3) The leather armor should be buyable by money you get by solving non-hostile quests, without the need to buy the farmers dress (still unconfirmed thou).

Best Regards

here's some stuff that might be useful

The leather armor can be stolen from the storeroom once you have picklock skill, cheapest way to do it is to get the legder from lehmar and get lockpicking from Thorben. To get to the storeroom you'll have to climb the wall behind the tree where Regis sits in the evening, then jump on the roof of Matteo's and then down to the storeroom with the 2 chests. You can safely pick the chest, the guard is oblivious to you.

Notes: Incidently I still have no idea why the other chest "will never open" and for the ledger Quest you can give it to Thorben, get the XP, buy it back from him through his inventory, sell it to Coragon, buy it back, then finally give it to Hanna. (+600 XP total) and everyone is happy.

You can get a free Pirate's Cutlass (30 dmg, 20 str) on the beach across from the paladin boat all the way at the far end (watch out for the lizard)

Sarah Gives you a free Cutlass as well very early on if you report Cathran instead of her to Andre (you must pickup Cathran's "Favor" Quest on the way to Khorinis BEFORE you visit Lobart the farmer. But the one on the beach is easier.

There's a Wolf's tooth on the way to the tavern early on, in the pile of human bones near the molerat cave. Exit east gate and go right, or have Lares take you there so you don't have to fight anything and still get XP.

Thats all I can remember now, if I find more stuff I'll post it here

Thats the spirit. Exactly the kind of stuff I was looking for. Most of this tips will be listed early in the F.A.Q. The goal is to make it possible to become pretty decent without wasting to many points, and gain as much xp/gold/items as possible without even leaving the city. Something any mage player would love but ofcourse useful for both mercenary and paladin.

I can't kill the lizard on the beach to get to the Pirate's Cutlass. I'm a lvl 3, 20 str, 20 dam sword, 15 armor.

Some other tips:

In front of the Paladins Boat turn right and walk across te other harbor. At the end is a 16 damage sword, some bolds and arrows, a silver ring and a lumb of ore.

At the harbor side of the barracks in Khorinis is a leather bag with 25 gold

When walking from Xardas to Khorinis you meet some goblins, turn right there, on some hay stacks is a leather bag with 25 gold.

Outside Khorinis on the way to the tavern is a cave on the left side of the road, just inside the cave is a leather bag with 50 gold. (don't go in to far or you will meet an orc warrior)

In front of the Cript (near onars farm) is a leather bag with 50 gold, a short bow, rusty sword, and arrows. (Watch out for the bloodfly's)

Near Onar's farm there is a cave with 3 field raiders. You can get Fester to help you (or clear it out for you). Inside you will find gold, arrows, a shortbow, rusty sword, rusty axe, potion (don't know what kind) and a gold ring.

That is all i got so far, i i'm not very far in the game. All of it can be done by a lvl 2 caracter, with only 20 str easely.

in the lighthouse area (eg following path to lighthouse) but not actually going tothe merc camp (unless you dream of becoming a pin cushion) now i cant really be that specific about this as i dont remember the exact route, hover searching around the area a bit you will see a high peak, work your way to the top of it and at the top are some nice items, and a +10 mana ring....

forrage for mushrooms, eat 50 and thats +10 mana.... if you do both you are allready at 30 mana without having to learn anything...

low level tip... getting to level 2 is quite hard compared to upping levels later on in the game.... you cant go round killing beasts, missions are scarce/hard at low level... once you hit level 2 you think, great im on my way now... however there are still few missions to do... what makes the difference at this point is spending your 10 lp wisely... if you spend them on strength for example... you have 20 strength, and can weild a heavier weapon, however this makes little difference early on, you will have low combat skills so getting experience points is going to be just as hard as it was on level 1... instead spend those first 10 points on something that will help you get more points (forget which path you wish to follow later on in the game, at this point in the game it shouold be open to all possibilities, even if you know you want to be mage pretend that you dont know that yet and focus on ways of simply getting easier XP... spend those first 10 lp you get on 1h or 2h weapons, it will make a great difference to you... get better at weapons before you bother building up strength to carry heavier ones... a weapon which needs 90 strength is pretty pointless if you have 5% skill in it.

visit other areas... at low levels, you feel confined to korinis, because the beasts surrounding are largely too hard for such a low level... use the age old skill of running away to reach onars farm, the tavern and other such areas, and capitalise on the piss easy missions (there are a few in every area) early on when you really need them, especcially as later on they become boring to do as you are capable of doing harder ones..

I beat the lizard at level 5. At that stage I had not used up a single point of experience. Lizards are fairly easy if you just wave the sword.

the reason i had problems with the lizard is my graphic settings were too high, resulting in sluggish controlls and jumpy gameplay, making it impossible to fight animals due to the nature of their attacks (with animals you must wait for them to strike and interupt them with some cold steel)

i sense a lot of people who post about combat being difficult (i have seen a few, many mention the same sluggish reactions as i experienced) need to turn down the texture and model quality a touch, it can make all the difference

Lares proposes to escort you to Onar's farm, actually he only escorts you to the tavern, but *you* gain experience for stuff *he* kills.

So if you provoke monsters from the sides of the Town-tavern road (the orc in the cave for example) and get them to follow you to where Lares is waiting for yo on the path, you'll gain easy XP early on.

You might also consider buying Alrik's sword and equiping it yourself. As long as you have it equipped you will gain a 10% bonus on One-handed figthing skill.

I found some more great stuff
strenght bonus +5 ring
ring of astral power +10 mana
weapon protection +5 ring

Above the cave with the orc:
Walk from Khorinis to the tavern, left side of the road is a cave, climb above it on a letch, there is a skeleton there, strenght bonus +5 ring, weapon protection +5 ring, militia short sword: 10 damage but worth 300 gold and some potions.
So go there if you are a fighter, great start

Walk out of the east gate, toward the left (lighthouse) go up the mountain as far as you can. When you see the lighthouse, tunr around and go back and up the mountain, past Niclas ( a hunter, he can teach you bow skills). Further up the mountain. As high as you can, right on top is a skeleton, besides the skeleton are some nice things: a few spell scrols, a leather bag with 100 gold and a Ring of astral power: +10 mana

Right of the south entrance in the trance are some rusty swords, a rusty axe and a silver ring

I found out what the potion in the cave with field raders is: it is a +5 dextery potion.

When you collect herbs for Constantino (master of alchemy), talk to Zuris after him (he is the trader of potions at the marktplace).
Zuris knows where Constantino gets his herbs and at that spot will grow new herbs.
So if you don't talk to Zuris the herbs won't be there.

I hope i can find some more.

Here's an easier way to get to the +5 Strength ring that Xerox talks about.

1. Follow the path from Akil's Farm as if you are going to Khorinis
2. Instead of taking the stairs down to reach the lower path, veer left after the stairs and go towards the edge of the cliff.
3. You will follow along a narrow path, but eventually reach the skeleton that has a +5 strength ring, a militia short sword (low stats, but worth 90 gold), and something else I can't recall.

Turn left from the East gate and keep below the path. After killing some rats and some other easy critters, you'll see a cave nearby. Inside are lots of meatbugs, two men further back, but just inside was an Orc weapon you can use for the smith quest.

On the way to Niclas (on top of the mountain left from the east gate), look left of the road after the turn, behind a tree stump is a leather bag with 25 gold and a light crossbow. (40 dam, 25 dex, value 600 gold)

Behind Lobart farm near against the stone circle is a leather bag with 25 gold.

Just inside the higher quarters of town is another leather bag with 25 gold.
Walk up the ramp to the higher quarters, past the guards, turn right at walk back besides the ramp. In the green in the bag.
