RPGDot Feature: The Chronicles of Ny Interview

We first discovered indie developer ClownKeep's 'The Chronicles of Ny' last year but not a lot of detail has been revealed about the actual gameplay. Our interview with ClownKeep founder David LaRocca and Game Designer Bruce Muncher digs into the workings of this CRPG which will be released as a series of episodes:
RPGDot: Character development is skill-based. How deep is the skill system? What sort of non-combat skills are there?

Bruce: To begin with there will not be that many, but each adventure should see a few more tossed into the mix. Leadership will be a real key to help control your party members. Climbing can be very useful at times. Haggle can help get you things you want. Some things like Sneak and Listen and Open Locks are skills that if you take and spend a lot of time practicing and developing it will take away from your fighting skills. We will not really have classes, although if you decide to go down the path of magic, that will be pretty one-way. It is possible to have a little skill in a number of things, but the more you spread out your skills the more difficult it will be to specialize in any one thing…like fighting style. We want the player to feel that his character is what he decides to make him into.
Read it all here!

This game looks pretty good from what I've seen so far. I hope they can get enough debt to continue producing.

The only part of the interview I didn't like was this:

"Combat will be similar to most PC RPG’s, a fast paced, turn based, system that can be paused to set up attacks. We have designed a lot of new features that will really spice things up, can’t go into much detail about that right now though."

I wish they said most recent PC Rpg's. And even if your RT system is set up by timed turns it is still RT. No need to pause in a turn-based sytem. And turn-based systems are not fast paced.

I still don't understand why devs would put so much effort into making a complex world and game, and making dialque and npc interaction fun. But then going RT, which usually means that combat will be a lot easier than it would be in a TB game. But being an RPG it will probably combat heavy, so the thing you do the most will be the worst feature.

Why go real time? Unless you are making a diablo clone casual players will not play your game.

I'm not sure why David used that combat description. It's actually a BG-like real-time-with-pause although he says "we are adding a lot of features to it so it will be more interactive than just click to attack". My best guess is the "turn-based" bit refers to the underlying rounds.

As you know, I'm with you on the advantages of turn-based but I believe these guys are fans of BG/BG2, so I guess they see that as the best system. We should have more coverage on TCoN later in a few months and I'll be sure to get more details on combat.

Leaving combat aside, they're really trying to concentrate on telling a good story and they have some really good ideas about party dymanics and the leadership skill.

I agree. This game all ready looks better than most big budget games in my opinion (which are all RT also), and geared towards more of an adult crowd. I really hope they can secure enough debt to continue operations and publish and distribute on their own.
