Console Vs Computer

Back in the end of the 70's I had a Intellivision; One of my friend a Vic20, another one had a Commodore64, one a Atari console, one a ColecoVision...
And I think the debate started right than for millions of people...
At that time for me console gaming was way better, since I was about 6 years old, knowing DOS just to start a game was beyond me. Some friends who had a PC couldn't start their games either, Big brother or dad had to do the work.
Than in the 80's Nintendo came along with the NES, IBM and amiga on PC counterpart, but for me graphics were good on both side( no more "I'm the black dot, you're the red dot"). Still I would prefer the better way the console came along with a better controlling system. I had this opinion up until AMD and Pentium4 came out, so PSX, N64, etc..., at that time for consoles. Especially RPG games would definetly need more buttons than the console controller could provide.
Graphics would definetly be better on PCs for now on, speed too... But to a price!!
So what do you think?

I like both systems for what they have to offer. My comp is used for making music, writing, photo editing and (to a lesser degree) gaming, while my current console is used for gaming and as a media center (DVDs, video recorder, music box).
In terms of games I prefer computers for shooters and RTS games while I prefer consoles for beat'em up and jump'n run games. In the case of CRPGs and adventures I have no preferences regarding the system. I find myself buying more console versions of multi-system games nowadays, though... like Myrthos pointed out in another thread, it's nicer to play games in the living room where you can keep an eye on the rest of your family!

I use my console really only for action sports games (ESPN NFL2k5, ESPN College Hoops, etc..), driving games, and pretty straightforward run and jumps. My kids also use it for the majority of their gaming.

My PC is my lifeline. I am a Visual FoxPro / Oracle programmer by trade (also know a bit of VB, and am studying C++), and my wife is a huge photography buff, so the PC is always on doing something. As far as PC gaming, Id say that 80% of my gaming is done on the PC. Plus I have four PC's setup in the house. All RPG's I play are for the PC (console RPG's are just to darn linear), my sports simulations are done on the PC (Out of the Park Baseball, Fast Break Basketball, Front Office Football) due to better stats keeping capabilities (Im a HUGE stat nut, especially baseball). The other prefered genres of mine are turn-based strategy games, and FPS's, which I feel I can control better with the mouse/WSAD setup).

PC is definately my choice for gaming. I have all the Consoles and quite often play older console games on emulators. But 99% of my gaming is done on PC.

The only games I realy play on consoles are AAA titles (Such as Jack & Daxter) and pretty much any RPG. I hate beat-em-ups so I dont play any of those. If I did like them though I would definately play them on Consoles. They are pretty much non-existent on PC's, and what did come out sucked arse!

The reasons that I play games on PC's are:

    1. I'm usualy already sitting there doing work when I get the urge to play something.
    2. Consoles low resolution realy bugs me. I feel very claustrophobic when playing console games.
    3. I hate having to swap out discs on consoles every time I want to play another game!
    4. I like messing around with a games "guts". Cant do that on consoles.
    5. Free Demos! Consoles have almost no demos available, and you have to play almost $10 just for a magazine to get the ones that are.
    6. PC's have a reasonable amount of AAA quality games, and quite a few average games, plus a few stinkers. Consoles on the other hand have very few AAA quality games, with quite a few average games, and incredible amounts of crap!

I know that consoles will always be more popular than PC's, because frankly the masses are just plain stupid. PC's require at least some intelligence to use, and most people just dont have what it takes.

I like consoles because of the ease of use. It's great to be able to drop a game into a machine and do zero configuring, installing or waiting. I also prefer playing action games (Tomb Raider) fighting games and platformers (not available on PCs anyway, for the most part) because they're easier to control with a game pad. I know you can get a gamepad for a PC, but I still want the ease of use.

I like PCs because I can play complex games in the strategy genre (Civilization, Age of Mythology, Rise of Nations, etc.) and the RTS genre (Warcraft III, Myth II and III, Warhammer 40,000, etc.) Also, let's face it, nothing beats a mouse for FPS games.

As for RPGs, I like them equally on consoles and PCs. The console varieties have a stronger focus on story, which generally leads to more linearity. PC RPGs tend to be more focused on stats and character development, which provides a more open environment.

Graphically, I think consoles have really closed the quality gap between PC and console games with this most recent batch of consoles. Yes, Half-Life 2 looks amazing. Yes, the PS2 has about as much processing power as a low-end PC, which is most evident when a game is ported from the PC to the PS2, and it can't even handle Half-Life 2. But when a game is made specifically for the PS2, I think it can look as good as a top PC game. Take a peek at God of War, an upcoming PS2 action game. The lead character fights a Hydra early in the game; my jaw hit the floor when I saw the graphics. Just stunning. The fact that the game also controls well and is fun (I played the demo) makes it more than a mere graphics demo.

Then there is the affordability issue. Keeping a PC at the high-end to play graphically intense games is a rather expensive undertaking. My console upgrades occur about every five years at about $300 per machine for all three machines. I've upgraded my video card on my PC three times since I bought this machine three years ago. I paid $1,400 for the PC, $250 to uprade from a GeForce 2 to a GeForce 3, $400 to go from the GeForce 3 to a GeForce 4 Ti 4600, and now $200 for a Geforce 6800. Plus I spent a couple of hundred upgrading my RAM.

Console games also tend to hold their value a little better than PC games and can be traded in at many software stores.

In the end, I'll keep buying new consoles and upgrading my PC so I can play the newest games unless I lose interest in gaming.

@ Chekote: "5. Free Demos! Consoles have almost no demos available, and you have to play almost $10 just for a magazine to get the ones that are. "

There are actually a lot of demos available for the X-Box and PS2, but you're correct that they're not free. I recommend subscribing to the demo magazines for the PS2 and X-Box. I just paid $45 for a year's worth of each magazine (versus $228 to buy a year's worth of each at the newsstand.

@ Chekote: "2. Consoles low resolution realy bugs me. I feel very claustrophobic when playing console games. "

I understand this bugs a lot of people. Personally, I never think about things like screen resolution, polygon counts or full ploygon backgrounds versus static backgrounds. I look for a more visceral "wow" effect. If a game has graphics that I find jaw-dropping, like God of War, then I don't care about the technical specs. I'm not suggesting you or anyone else should change your views or that you're wrong. I'm just saying I come at it from a different angle.

I'm not sure I agree about the masses being plain stupid. I think it's as valid to assume that many people have other things in their lives that take precedence over tinkering with their machine and prefer to play the game than tweak the settings. On the other hand, they COULD be stupid.
