Because it was released with (for many) game-wrecking bugs, completely vacant towns, *no* real side-quests, obviously incomplete areas, a rediculous spawning system, a magic system that required the player to go to such lengths to be a mage as to indicate that no serious thought could have gone into it, 'on the box' features that are still missing 9 months later ...
... I wonder as a serious game reviewer whose opinions I generally agree with how you could *not* see that? I felt my 3/5 was actually pretty generous, and I gave it based on a bias for the (my opinion) excellent dungeon designs, and the hours of fun I managed to have.
I think most people would be happy just calling it mediocre and forgetting about it except that it keeps just enough activity and 'we're working on X' that people stay in touch. If they had just dumped it and gone out of business like every other RPG developer then things would have been better ...

ROFL...D.W. Bradley, is that you???
That post reeked of "They hate MY game for silly reasons I don't agree with". Any of the admins want to do a quick /whois on that guests IP?? Ten to one says it's an HP employee or DC's "bgaum" web caretaker. |

No, it's me. I forgot to log in (?). Anyway Dungeon Lords is a good game IMO.
I will be happy if somebody can tell a better game from last year |

regardless of personal opinions, the general conscensus is what it is right or wrong, and to follow up with a collectors edition just seems literally comical at this point. Might as well bust out the Ruins of Myth Dran-o collectors edition too ='.'=
Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor is an underappreciated game. Fully patched it is FAR better than Dungeon Lords. I'm about 75% done with POR but I can't get the motivation to continue with Dungeon Lords beyond Fargrove.
DL plays like a silly console game. The spawning is just stupid - it happens so often its clear it was used to provide half the combat content in the game if not more. There are no quests (that I've encountered) - just a linear progression. The dungeon designs are totally linear (at least the one leading into Fargrove). The melee combat is boring. There just isnt any reason to continue.
Its just not fun even as a consolish combat game. _________________ "For Innos!" |

Many of the later dungeons are really, really well done ... aside from the rampant spawning ... _________________ Dopelar effect (n.) The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.

I had the game on my system since launch and didnt bother trying it until 1.3. Really I gave it a chance and tried 1.4 Friday night. I just can't stand it. After playing superior titles like Severance (Blade of Darkness) and Gothic 2, its hard to accept the console like combat in DL compared to Severance and the lack of RPG and combat complexity compared to Gothic.
So I deleted it finally. Really I'm very frustrated with this title - I followed this thing for years. Maybe the later Dungeons are great but I just can't stomach getting to them. _________________ "For Innos!" |

Ok, how about I do you one better and give you an entire list?
Dungeon Siege 2, Fable: TLC, Sacred Underworld, The Mount & Blade Demo, and Freedom Force 2 are all games that I can think of off the top of my head.
Of course, if you count console RPGs, I can add Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2, Y's Ark of Napishtim, Stella Deus, Atelier Iris, and Dragon Quest 8 to that list as well.
It would be better for you to say what game is WORSE then Dungeon Lords. Because, quite frankly, only one game released last year was worse then DL...and that dinstinction belongs to Metal Heart. |

Aside from what Shimbatha just mentioned, there is also Heretic Kingdoms (Kult) which was better. Restricted Area I'd put on even keel. Space Rangers 2 is *much* better (US version coming soon), and FATE is *far* superior. Gothic 2 Gold in the US gave us NotR which ... well, it is greatness!
Even most of the mediocre handheld RPG's I highlighted in my RPGDot articles were better than DL.

Dungeon Siege2, Fable, FF2, Sacred are terrible games.
DS2=screensaver
Fable=console shit
FF2=Hahaha good joke
Sacred=boring Diablo clone
I am sure you can list more crappy games.
Mount&Blade is an exception.

Trolling is out of fashion, it is now 'stealth marketing'. But elevating the interest in DL by deriding some - but not all - other games mentioned, he attempts to get people interested enough to check it out.

I have to agree with theverybigslayer. Fable was a beat-em up nothing more. Freedom force 2, while it was a good game it is really a strategy game more than an rpg. DS2? click and *yawn* at it's best.
Missing features? Please tell me one. Don't you dare say that *empty* towns are anything to be upset about, try playing the bards tale series, there might be 5 npcs in an entire city and every single house looks nearly IDENTICAL. No "furniture", WOOPTY DO!!! Great!!!! I can't stand having manuever around tables etc.
The simple fact is 2005 was an abysmal year for RPGS, I would certainly not be complaining about an average (as of 1.4) rpg being released. |
