This is likely to be off-topic because the newsbit doesn't specify the genre but some readers might be interested to know Irrational is hiring across a range of disciplines for what sounds like a big project:
Off the back of winning game of the show at E3, we’re looking for lots of talented people to join us in Australia. We’re working on the sequel to one of the best loved PC franchises of all time. I think gamers are going to go nuts when they find out.
Go nuts, huh? Hmm. |

I'd prefer Thief, though the wish is highly irrational. _________________ Jaz |

I like the pun there. Was it intended too?
Thief 4 would be welcome, especially so as the third installation didn't tick for me. _________________ Don't work too much; it could interfere with your drinking. |

When did I miss Ultima X?
But you probably mean Ultima IX. As we all know, Ascension was a joke by some students.

Thief 4 ?
Make that a "Thief 3". There never was a Thief 3, only some crap called Thief: Deadly Shadows. So a real Thief 3 would be prefered. Same goes for Deus Ex 2.
I for myself would like to see a Ultima VII, Part 3. :P |

I meant Ultima X, but there was an Ultima X in the making a few years ago, if you think about it...

I disagree, but this is not the place for this well known hot topic !

I partially agree, but there *is* a Thief 3, as good or as bad as it is : don't lie at yourself ! |

Yes, the Design Director job description reveals it: understanding of and desire to create first-person shooter gameplay . Plus, if the artist job descriptions are any indication, then we can also assume that it is a SciFi FPS: Mech and Tech concepting ability – weapons, vehicles, technology etc.
Sounds like they are making a Tribes sequel for PC and consoles actually. |

Tribes is a Serria property, isn't?
Plus they made a Tribes 2 and Vengence they sell well, though they did a good job on it, IIR?
Sounds much more like Dues Ex. beside Tribes is "best loved PC franchises of all time", I don't think so.
Eidos could have had a sale to help with slumping sales and maybe decided to let one of the two go Thief or Deus Ex and since Thief sold better (IIR).
Yeah not many BEST LOVED PC franchises of ALL TIME, around right?
I mean the whole idea of best loved is exclusionary, right. |

Not sure . Looks like the IP might indeed reside with Sierra (or Vivendi since Sierra is a Vivendi Games unit) but since Tribes Vengeance has been "developed exclusively by Irrational Games" as the US Tribes Vengeance website states, I guess it might be within the realm of possibilities that Irrational has been contracted for another Tribes gig (or -going by the "mech" quote- maybe even for a Mechwarrior gig by MS... who knows? ).
Anyway, they don't need to own the licence. This could be contract development all the way.

Deus Ex is far from it as well . And don't underestimate the popularity of Tribes. I haven't played any of the Tribes games myself so I'm not even a fan of them but I've heard that they are still very popular among the FPS multiplayer community.
Besides, they want to spark some interest in people so "best loved PC franchise" should be regarded as marketing speak.
Finally, if they really mean "PC franchise" as in PC-exclusive (up to now) then it can't be Tribes or Deus Ex since both franchises have had console releases.
Oh well, time will tell. Whatever it is, I find it slightly disturbing (already) that the job descriptions emphasize that any potential candidates must have been involved with at least one shipped console title. Yay for another consolized FPS on PC where you get a checkpoint save system plus sucky controls and a FUBAR interface. Can't wait .
Oh, and if that "mech" quote was to be taken literal then I'm not sure if it is such a good idea to try to compete with ET: Quake Wars or BF 2142 which will probably offer quite similar gameplay... hmmm... but then again it wouldn't surprise me if the semi-recent flood of WWII-based FPS is any indication. Let's go and milk the hell out of mech/SciFi stuff next *sigh*.

I'm with you on the theme, Mo, but it won't be Tribes. Vivendi cancelled support on Vengeance before the first patch was released (linky and the sales were rumoured to be very poor.
Deus Ex by Irrational I would kill for. _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |
