Novice here

I bought MW yesterday and knew I might have some troubles running it, but figured with the specs on the box, I'd give it a go. My computer is PIII, 800MHZ, 256RAM, GEF2. It's not playable, at this point, on my system. Graphics look fine (great actually), but it is too choppy and slow to respond to commands. My question is: How can I get the most out of what I have. What are the first steps. I've been lurking for awhile and know there are those that have the expertise here. Understand I'm an idiot when it comes to my computer, because most everything I've ever bought runs fine with what I have so I've never had to tweak, really. I'm not sure how to even get the most out of my processor. This request is for saints and guardian angels only so if you're about to flame me for my ignorance and waste of bandwidth - save your energy. I'll be just as glad as you when the forum starts to focus on the actual gameplay.

1. uninstall
2. defragment (or if you have partition for games, format)
3. install again

(1. - 3.) not necessary if you did it or if you defragmented not many days before MW

4. stop all visible backgrounds programs including antivirus
5. use some utility to stop all "invisible" background programs (if you are expirienced user, you can use msconfig.exe (you can run it with Run menu in windows, just type there msconfig))
6. make yourself sure that AA is off in properties of your graphic card
7. stop in first village and tweak it
-----a) choose 1024 * 768 - not higher
-----b) main slowdowns are shadows, turn them off or nearly off
-----c) set visible range to half
-----d) set 3D sound to low quality

You can have other preferences, so your setting my vary a little bit.

In addition to the above:
(I haven't actually got the game so these are all guesses)

I'd advise dropping resolution to 800*600 if it makes things go fast (although that will look pretty poor if you have anything bigger than a 17" monitor)

If you've only got two speakers (or 2 and a sub) you can turn of EAX (or A3D) sound.

Turn off dynamic lighting? not sure you can do this as I don't know how the day night change works.

run in 16bit colour

And after all that, go read some of the docs here:

Yes, follow guests advice but only if you will not be able to run MW well enough when you will do what I said.
I tried to pick things that will not affect visual quality so badly as lower res, 16bits etc.
