How come my UA skill increases while I wear Medium armor?

I got medium armor as a major skill. I also wear about 3 pieces of medium armor (can't afford anything more just yet).
I've fought a few battles and all of a sudden in my last battle my Unarmored skill goes up by 1 point?
Why? It's a miscelaneous skill and I wear medium armor which is actually a MAJOR skill.
I would expect that my medium armor would increase in battle, not UA.

Anybody know why this is happening? It feels like I'm doing something wrong...but I have no idea what.

The things you fight are hitting the unarmored parts of your body.

There are several (more than usual) pieces of body that you cover with armor in MW.
When monster hits you in one of these parts, your skill encrease - which one simply depends on what type of armor (or without armor) do you have there.

Aha, that makes sense.
Phew, now I know all is well again

Thanks for the quick replies, Danicek and anonymous!
