I don't think you need to have played the recent Star Wars games to appreciate KotOR.

KotOR2 won't be released for quite a while.

Too Many.

KOTOR is the only *console* game that has really sucked me in and made me forget time altogether, for hours and hours. Ninja Gaiden is ok, POTC, etc can hold their ground for a while. Even Gauntlet Legends had me playing for a few long stretches with my bro, but nothing like KOTOR. Gives me an old time Atari 2600 headache.

Feels like the first time.

Get it, or miss out

I'd say it is more like Never Winter Nights in space. Same basic character template, and the interface is very similar (w/ out the radial menu).

The biggest differences (aside from the technology) is that there are no "gee have I seen that building before" moments, the inventory is essentially infinite and the ability to directly issue orders for the the rest of the party.

KOTOR was build on the NWN Aurora engine, so that comparison is a bit more accurate.
