Not sure if this should be here or in Spoilers, but given that it's a game mechanics question and not plot-related I'm posting it here.
This may be a somewhat idiotic question, but after playing through Gothic and now being well into Gothic 2, I still don't quite understand how strength affects the amount of damage dealt. Is your strength added directly to a weapon's base damage? Is the strength IN EXCESS of the required strength for a weapon added to base damage? The latter would seem to suggest that one may be better off using weaker weapons with lower requirements.
A clarification would be much appreciated.

To quote Gorath:
Melee damage = (WeaponDamage - EnemyArmour) + (0 OR Strength).
'0' is default, Strength is added in case of a critical hit, which has a probability of 'Weaponskill'.
