Greyhawk: Demo @ Gamer's Hell

Gamer's Hell is now offering up a <a href="http://www.gamershell.com/news_BGreyhawkBDemo.shtml" target="_blank">demo</a> of 'Greyhawk: The Temple of Elemental Evil'. The "demo" weighs in at a whopping 804MB. Why is that? Well, it's the full version, actually. You can unlock it after purchasing a key online (US$ 49.95).<br><br>Other Mirrors:<ul type="disc"><li><a href="http://www.computergames.ro/download.php?optiune=show_download&did=2065" target="_blank">Computer Games Online</a> - Thanks, Assassin.<li><a href="http://desktop.kazaa.com/us/games/temple_of_evil.htm" target="_blank">Kazaa</a></ul>

A 200meg version is coming - reportedly tomorrow - so if you don't have the bandwidth for the full thingie, you can wait and get the smaller version.

6 hours of play-time is pretty good, and I for one wouldn't actually want more - don't want to spoil the game for myself...

So what's it like? I enjoyed it immensely - very solid character generation, although the ideas behind the roll or generate character baffle me... basically, you can roll and re-roll a powerful character, but if you chose to generate, you get so few points that you'll never come remotely close to making anything better than mediocre... weird.

Don't expect Baldur's Gate story and voice-acting, but it's not quite Icewind Dale slugfest either. Combat is great - good system, lots of options for refinement, or you can take the simple approach and not bother with all the different combat stances etc. if you just want to go ahead.
Magic looks awesome, and the moment when my Burning Hands spell set off the spiderweb holding three of my characters, torching them, I laughed out loud, before realising that I'd just wiped out my party in the most terrific way I've seen in a long time... hurt so good.

Soo... I'll be getting the game - no doubt. Urge you to check it out. Oh, and increase the scroll speed the first thing you do - default is horribly low

Enjoy!

its not all gravy either. There are alot of bugs and other annoyances. I am having a ball playing the game but my advice is for people to maybe wait and see if there is going to be a patch that fixes some of the issues.

Roll and generate are the difference between casual and hardcore basically.

In Ironman mode you can't reroll, I believe. So if your first roll for your wizard comes up with the highest stat 12 and the rest 11 or under... tough. 25 point buy looks pretty good then, as it can get you that 16 to 18 int that you need to kick ass as a wizard.

It's prestige too... bragging rights among nerds. You'll note it says rerolls on the character sheet. If you rolled 51 times to get the numbers you wanted and then brag about how uber you are people can mock you for making 51 characters to get the one you wanted.

But if you rolled once and got great stats people will say 'wow! nice stats' just like in pen and paper.

It really is a shame this is "Kazaa only". I won't be able to order the game until Monday so an option to download it and purchase a key is a great one. I'd rather wait another 10 years than install the steaming hunk of crap that is Kazaa however

It isn't Kazaa only, now. Click the Gamer's Hell link and download it, if you want.

I've tried and am greeted with the following: "Pulled due to Atari request. Expect a new version soon."
