I just bought Morrowind two weeks ago. I like the atmosphere, but it doesn't feel personal. That might be the lack of voice recordings. Why don't devs have a list of 50 names you can choose from so NPCs can say your name verbally and not in written text. It would feel more personal. I do like the game but at level 31 or 32, I don't remember, I'm already a almighty super character. Even Fyr is a piece of cake to whoop on. I suppose I could run around with nothing but underwear on but that just be weaird.

Anyway, I have played Gothic 20+ times and have the game mesmerized to the smallest detail. What I like so much about it is not having 80 stats, and the fact that you don't have to read everything. The journal is amazing compared to Morrowind's.

Though I would of liked to see a paper doll inventory in Gothic.

The games are totally different in gameplay, atmosphere, and combat, but both are great in these ways. Morrowind has higher quality graphics, but also more loading points. Gothic's graphics are outdated even in G2 but has only three loading points. The devs have compensated for what they think the gamer wants, but every gamer wants something different. I loved Gothic and I like Morrowind, but Morrowind is just holding me over till G2 come out on shelves. And a little project called STALKER: Oblivion Lost. An astonishing game that blows Half-Life 2 and Doom out of the water. Trust ME.

Morrowind isn't about battles. I began with the main quest when I was lvl 60 or so, just so that the battles don't get me away from the story. I killed Dagoth Ur with 2 or 3 swings with My Axe.

About S.T.A.L.K.E.R., We're talking about MW & Gothic, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. doesn't have to do anything about it. It isn't an RPG, actually.

I think the three strongest reasons I like Gothic and G2 better than MW is the journal, the dialogs and the graphics.

I find that the journal in MW is so bad that sometimes it can be nearly impossible to find out which quests you still have going on and which you have finished without a excellent memory.

Also the dialogs is strange to use, and the feeling that you get from Gothic's spoken dialogs is way better than the text-only dialogs of MW.

And, about the graphics: Even though some people say that the graphics of Gothic and G2 is outdated, I like them far better than the brown and grey world of Morrowind.

I'm with you Toaster, now that I have gotten into the game I would like to throw that journal out with the bath water. I like the game, but that part needs a lot of revamping.

1- Journal. You can see the quests you finished\doing & the state of them. Also it's cool to have all the dialogs ever spoken in the journal. Ok. It could be better, but it's good.
2- Dialogs: As I said fifty times by now, get a mod & do whatever you want with the dialogs, attaching sound to them if you like...
3-Graphic, Never played Gothic, so can't judge. But Morrowind is cool if you make the Contrast at 100% or have a constant ultravision\night eye.
4-Morrowind is A HUGE(!!!!!!!!) game!
5-It's cool to so easily enchant items or make new spells
6- TES CS!!!

I don't know. It may be Gothic's gritty setting and characters that put it over Morrowind for me.

Well, to me Gothic is better in almost every way, but that doesn't mean that it's like that for everyone.

It means a couple things:
1) abrasive
2) dark, rough, criminal, profane

The second one applies here, and the definition is rather broad and vague because of wide usage in lots of situations.

I would say, based on the small amount of Gothic1 that I've played, that it's very gritty. The characters are slimy, violent crooks. Definitely lots of grit there.

Which reminds me of a third definition of "gritty" that doesn't get used too often- determined.

I hate that! I hoped that Gothic isn't like that.

Gothicīs setup was inspired by John Carpenterīs Escape from New York: the hero is given a mission and thrown into a prison colony. Every single NPC in the game is a criminal, although there are of course differences.
G2 has a lot of 'normal' people, it plays on the island the prison colony was on. Itīs not as cynical and aggressive as G1 was. I canīt say this was necessarily a step forward, though. Good villains are important.

Both are very different from Morrowind. Game mechanics have almost nothing in common.

Morrowind is the greatest game EVER created. It's even better than Daggerfall which I thought to be impossible. I have been playing this for probably 18 months. Now, when I play new games they just SUCK compared to MW. I hope their will someday be a game that eclipses this, but it will be many years if ever. Most companys don't want to give you 300-500 hours of gameplay in one box. This game has changed gaming forever. It is SICK and INSANE! What other game on the market right now has 300+ books that you can take off the shelf and read. Some of these suckers have 70 pages of well written text. These graphics still kill everything on the market 2 years later. This game is like the Middle Earth of RPGs. People keep knocking the story and NPCs. Have you actually read the material in this game. There is more info in this game than every RPG on the market combined. It is insane that they even designed something like this.

Gothic, and Arx are cool...but hell if you want complexity and lots of replay value...go with these 2...

1. Morrowind
2. Wizardry 8
