I have found Ultima IX a bit childish

Well, I won't explain again how I didn't have any trouble with my Ultima 9, but to answer the topic, I didn't find U9 childish at all.
I don't think that games with lots of stats and "character development" (which too often only mean adding numbers) are more adult than others. I think that what make a game childish or adult is the atmosphere, the story...

As Ultima 4 was the first CRPG were the aim was to become virtuous (and really meaning it, not meaning "kill the main baddie"), Ultima 9 is one of the first CRPG I've ever seen where you realise that a hero who keeps saving the world isn't such a great thing. It's the first CRPG where you see that you shouldn't have helped the people after giving them the virtues but helped them to follow them. Sadly, they didn't develop this idea as much as they could have, but still it's here.

I also liked the perverted justice in Yew with all these people sueing everyone as soon as they had a chance, I didn't find this stab at today's society childish...
