I've found that if you can paralyze him, your melee'ers can wail...the trouble is, he's pretty tough to paralyze. However... he's more vulnerable to magic attacks than melee. If you have any status ailment attacks...use them, then try to get melee on him!

I'm pretty far along in the game, but going backwards have 1 question about this quest. I got into the bank vaults via ID cards, and took a long time to break in via the locked door (Myles was useless to me, as my bard was a much better lockpick). When I got there, I got nothing for my efforts. Anybody else get this?

Did you by any chance get in there through an alternative route first?

This is a spoiler, I suppose, but anyway, if you go into the jail, and open one of the cells, you can get into the vault through an escape tunnel someone's already dug for you. You can then teleport back out again, and noone knows the vault's been opened. You don't get that much of a reward in there, though.

One thing I've noticed with the Rat boss is you can take a contract out on somebody through him. You pay him money, give him a name and he says he'll take care of it. Not sure if he ever does or not and most of the npcs aren't too hard to kill anyhow, might try it on my next go round.

This is a spoiler for the bank vault:

I first got to the vault by using an ID card and the elevator, and cleaned it out. (There are 3 available besides Marten's; 2 are needed to open doors later, and 1 isn't. I can't remember the names it was so long ago, and because by blind luck I used the right one the first try that wasn't needed later [the cards disappear as used].) Later, I took the tunnel, walked away for a long time because the lock was too tough, and finally picked the lock much later. I thought I was in a different part of the vault, but never found any new items, and walked out via the elevator. The bank personnel were offended, but can be killed at that point without any consequences.

I also much later killed Don Barlone (my characters are now around level 17), and did not find the encounter tough, even though I fought him and his stooge at the same time. The stooge is much more susceptible to magic, while Barlone required hand-to-hand combat (missiles almost always missed him). I thought that about 98000 gold was excessive for the Astral Dominae.

Previously, while wandering in the Northern Wilderness before killing Barlone, I encountered a group of Rapax Samurai and Scouts(?), who did NOT attack me. They said I did not deserve to ascend because I was allied with the Rakuza, and walked away. I'm curious to see what happens when I go back, if I can find them again. Anybody know the answer to this?

I think you will be able to ascend now. But I am not sure. Try it and post results.

I also killed that rat. Why to pay him such large amount?

(but ofcourse I had much money, much more that I needed)

It took me a couple of tries but I took care of both Barlone and Calzone. The best thing I got was the Cane of Corpus for my fairy ninja. Poisons 50% of time. But it's so cursed that my bishop can't un-curse it. So my ninja can't switch to range weapons. Now he has to cast a lot more spells.
