Questions from a new magician. |
|
Hi all.. Well it is now my 3rd time through the game. I am so addicted :O
Anyway, I am a new magician now. Just got accepted into the circle of fire and on chapter 2 and the paladin sergio is ready to escort me to the VoM.
My only problem is, it seems being a magician looks trickier than I thought it would be. I've gotten frustrated and just pulled out a sword most of the time to defeat stuff.
I am level 10 with 30 str/10 dex 42 mana. I know fire arrow and level 2 magic. I have 5 more points to spend. What spell should I learn? Any other tips for starting out as a magician in chapter 2? I am so confused with this magic stuff |

I agree, I'm in basically the same spot as you(and this is my third time through). I'm in the Valley though. I just got to the castle. How the hell can you be a mage and not a skilled fighter. Many runs out so fast. I use fire arrow and ice arrow and I have 104 mana and run out so fast it is almost a waste to even use magic. I only have 30str and 30 on hand skill so my sword sucks and I can't kill enough with magic. When I played through the first 2 times I had everything in khorinis killed before I even went to the vally of mines and killed all the orcs before talking to Garond. I'm telling you, Paladin is the easiest class and then Dragon hunter...mage is so tough I'm about to give up. Any tips or do we just have to wait it out?
PS. I looked at some of the higher level spells (ie Great Fireball) and while they do goo damage (300) they also go through mana like MAD (75 per use!) How can I be a magic user when I don't have enough magic!!! |

yeah this is also what I'm wondering. I looked at the bigger spells and it looks like I will cast 2 spells then need a potion. I can't find meadow knotweed fast enough to keep up with my potion habit :O |

Believe it or not, it can be done. You don't need past fighter on weapons or marksman on bows. This is the easiest thing. Use your bow or xbow on the smaller stuff (up to snapper). If your dex high enough, you take those guys out with one or two arrows. On the bigger stuff, try like ice block that only cost 20 mana and then finish the critter with your sword. Once you get higher level spells, and high enough mana, you won't need but 2 spells to clear an entire area. I'm talking rain of fire, wave of ice etc. If you are going after the orcs in ch 4, usee bow or xbow, since you can exploit the ram, arrows and bolts are much cheaper than mana potions. On those stupid seekers, the only thing is to keep them from trying to possess you, if you don't have Karras' amulet yet hit them with fire arrow or fire ball and then go at them with your sword. Healing is cheaper than mana potions too. _________________ Just watch out you don't stress yourself out.

Hey there kind Fifl,
Do not despair, hang on in there, the true power of the mage comes later in the game, your stats for melee skills should have been a bit higher before you passed-out as a fire mage, so because of this weakness why not concentrate on your combat stats just for now? _________________ Forever aches my wretched soul, for Chromanin locked in that dark hole, though crypted key i've yet to learn, he knows one day i will return. |

When I play a Mage, I usually bump up my Dex (as well as Mana) so I can use nastier XBows. The heavier XBows really do a good job, even if you don't have any training -- you just have to be closer to your target.
Also, you can use the Dex-based swords (Sword, Rapier, Master Sword) for those few things you need a hand weapon for (e.g. knocking people down without killing them -- soften them up with XBow first, then finish them off with a Dex-based sword).
I learned Alchemy and then all the Mana potions. From there Sagitta taught me the perm Dex and perm Mana (Spirit) potions. From then on I kept bumping Dex with perm Dex potions and Mana with LP.
When using spells, stay out at max range and throw multiple shots as fast as you can. When hunting Orcs in VoM, and standing at max range, I can sometimes have 3 Fireballs in the air before the first hits. If you shot from Max range, often only the actual target "knows" you are there and charges -- the rest just stay in place. If they charge after getting 2 or 3 fireballs, you still have time to get your XBow out and shoot them 2 or 3 times before they hit you. Even Orc Elites can be taken out one at a time this way.
Hope some of this rambling helps. _________________ imposterAZ

I always become I fighting mage. I did the entire first chapter guildless and training two-handed and strength. (Fighting the Orc Elite in your leather armor is pretty tricky ). Then I joined the monastery and became a novice etc.
Any way in the end I was a level 41 Mage with 77% two-handed, strength about 120, more than 400 mana and every rocking spell there is.
So, when I first tried my Wave of Death rune in the monastery.
I was in the library and was wondering what the range of the spell was. I stood pretty close to Karras and thought I maybe could kill Hyglas too.
LOL It went right through the walls and I killed half the monastery
So it can be done |
