You should try both combat systems. Both work well enough, it´s a matter of taste. The classic controls give you lower entry barrier if you want to play Gothic 1. The new controls are less complicated. They make the game slightly easier.
In both cases you should know that you´re meant to stay out of trouble in the beginning. Some basic items and stats like weapon, armour, strength and weapon skill have a noticable effect on your combat abilities. Most NPC-related situations can be resolved without combat - or the fight can at least be delayed for a better day.
All fights between the starting place and the town -except the forrest to the left of the city gate- _can_ be survived if you do use the stuff you find. There are 5 more or less hidden places with loot you can collect before you talk to the first bandit at the road. Even the walk through the cave near the lake is possible with a few firebolts. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot

nm figured it all out-still can't levelup[!
Gothic doesent have classic RPG levelup. As u gather xp u achieve new levels and for each level u get 10 learning points. This points u can use to improve your stats and to learn abilities. But u cant use them yourself. U need a teacher. There are manny NPC who can teach u something. Who are they and what they can teach u u have to find out by yourself. _________________ No sig for now
