ES4: Oblivion - DLC9 - Mehrunes' Razor Official Mod Revealed
   

Bethsoft's Oblivion Downloads site has revealed the next official mod- <a href="http://obliviondownloads.com/Coming_Soon_DLC9.aspx" target="_blank">Mehrunes' Razor</a>. Whats this?! Quality is part of Bethesda name again?
   

Tis starting to look like we be seeing the shiny sheen of thee rich pot of gold at the end of the buetiful high end graphic multi-coloured rainbow of Bethesda's Oblivion at last.Finally we may gaze upon a real Official Mod! I be hoping!

Writing looks tempting and seductive with what looks to be excellent level design mixed in the juicy meat mod pie!

So FPS's get the episode treatment and RPG's will get the pay per quest treatment. Its all pay through the nose.

Digital distribution sounded good to me at first but this pretty much sucks. I'd like to play this quest but I just can't bring myself to adopt this payment model.

ie fight through another levelled dungeon to get a sword that will pwn everything so that the kids who complained that levelling makes things too hard can have their m-fing CHOCOLATE MILK

I love Oblivion, but Todd and the gang are totally missing with these paylet's mods. Vanilla Oblivion is already extremely easy, yet each mod introduced so far is just giving more munchkin items out. Why didn't they just call it the Weapon of Uberness mod. Good grief!

Who will pay in the end TIMES?
   

Yay verily that one shot kill nonsense is a wee bit unbalancing to say the least! I pray obtaining it wont be a five minute quest as i heard previous Mods have been.

As for Bethesda "not getting it" when it comes to Pay For Mods I be thinking tis too late like the Sinner wanting to change his ways as they are tossed into the burning hells of judgement. Tis a done deal with contracts Bethesda cant get out of.

*a special adaptation*

One day a humble digger, an avid rpg player at heart,
scraped together enough hard earned cash so he buy the much anticipated 'oblivion' .
He paid his 40 quid, then a graphics card upgrade was realised which broke the piggy-bank - another 120£.
The forums were rife with previews and reviews, he was overjoyed, he told his friends about it. He installed the game and began to play with eagerness and blissful delight, he could not leave the game alone. Each day he played marvelling at the powerful, beautiful graphics and openness of this 'huge' game. Has he gained levels he began to notice the scaling was automatic - not quite as he wished, there was a noticeable dumbing-down of gameplay that seemed suitable for very young players, later there was an over-abundance of specialised weapons and amour and artifacts, more than he could ever wish to handle.
Mod's/plug-in's began to appear at an alarming rate, many of them to overcome limitations and short-sightings of the game but most covertly and intentionally to build a formidable fan-base ready-primed for the next financial "sting" The game had become easy, gameplay became somehow repetitive in a way that was least anticipated. Disappointment of expectations had begun to set-in. He became somewhat disheartened, not hateful, as he was a true gamer and enjoyed all games for what they were. In truth he had overly expected too much from the game. He gradually reverted to playing some of his older treasured games as compensation in an effort to take his mind back to rpg normality.
As Bethesda grew and layed plans for further forthcoming attractions, the guy, now almost bankrupt, shyed-away looking for simpler not-so hyped, not-so fantastically graphical, not-so non-linear yet good mature-intelligence oriented games - less 'to suit all ages' games, more storyline led games.
New games of the genre which emerged later could not entice him back, media methods and
modernisms had killed-off the golden line that he once loved, arena/daggerfall/morrowwind,
yet oblivion had somehow jilted him, the affair was over.

Am just looking at screenshots and the interesting hype.
   

For a dungeon that is! Dont take my word for it Laddy for my tongue speaks mostly inane gibberish! Especially for a customer that shall never be due to the accursed material need of a CREDIT CARD! Oh being of humble means is such a money saver sometimes.I guess Bethesda is too rich to make deals with the phone companies to pay for downloads through ones monthly phone bill. Middleman costs and such.

If the Mehrunes Razor only kills weak enemies in one hit or had a permanent set limit that wouldn't work on boss enemies then it would be ok and I hope they actually make it a good quest to go along with the big dungeon or it will be just as bad as the previous ones.

Hi there!

Why are you guys so against this method of releasing additional content?? I mean - it's dirt cheap! It's only $3!

Whether you like Oblivion or not you have to admit that it shipped in its original state with a lot of content - there's at least 50 hours of gameplay straight out of the box and probably more if you want to solve all guilds and all the daedra quests. That's a lot of value for money these days where a typical good action game lasts maybe 12-15 hours. Personally I don't have that much time for gaming anyway with a job to take care of and a family to spend time with, so I'm generally happy if a new game delivers 15 hours of quality game time.

So, how much is a game in US these days? $40-$50?? Divide that up by hours of game time and you'll see that you generally pay between $2-$4 per hour of game time (which is already pretty cheap entertainment if you ask me).

Now, these mods are for people who completed Oblivion and wants more. They are *optional*, they are *offers* - noone forces you to buy them, nor are they necessary to play the game that shipped. Are they over-priced? Well, at $3 we should be happy if the mod adds one hour of game time (from the calculations above), more than happy if they add, for example, five. Now, I don't know how long these mods last, but I'm pretty sure it's at least an hour!

So, sorry guys - I'm afraid I just don't follow you when you start to whine about being ripped off by Bethesda.

What I hear you say is that downloadable content sounded so nice, but this way it just plainly suck because you have to pay all the time. Well, yes - you pay small amounts lots of times.

It seems that the only "method of digital distribution" that would suit you is the one where the companies *gives* you the extra stuff for free Now, that's not really a good business for the game companies, is it??

Only $3, only $2! That by itself means nothing, it's the ratio of content and price that counts. Take $2 for two sets of horse armor, with no quest to speak of, and no NPC's using it. Compare that to the price of the original game (or any game, for that matter) and the content it offers, or the content offered in a standard $25 expansion and $2 is not cheap at all.
And while the ratio is gettin a little better the same still holds for the latest offerings. All the current mods combined run at almost $11, that's half an expansion or a bargain bin game. Yet the content included is nowhere near half an expansion. So in the end people pay more money for less content. It's for each individual to decide wether to buy or not of course, but I don't like the trend, because despite these facts it's apparently successful, and so we will see more of it.

And finally what really rubs me the srong way is that there are obvious "hooks" for the plugins in the original game, such as the closed door to the orerry and dialogue describing it's wonders. That makes it a little less than optional somehow, I just dislike that, it's in-game advertising, a ruse, bah!

So no, it's not about wanting to get content for free, but about paying a fair sum for a fair value.
