u must play gothic 1 first i highly recommend you do, the whole idea of the colony and the barrier and all the prisoners you meet in g2 will mean alot more to you once you play g1.

You really ought to play GI first!!!

As Aphazel and yeberion have already mentioned, the story of GII builds upon the first the game.
Furthermore, the atmosphere in GI is unbeatable - seeing the magic barrier flash in the twilight of dusk... *sigh*

You don't have to play G1, but I would personally strongly suggest to play it first. It gives a good background to G2 and quite many things will be easier to understand then, not to mention the memories when you finally enter Valley of Mines again in G2 I had soooo many memories... I basically, for a while, was simply running through VoM to check out the "old spots".

You MUST play Gothic I first, not to mention that you will have the feeling of a SINGLE game if you start Gothic II immidetiately after you've finished the first one (you lucky one!!!)

GII has basically the same engine as GI, so playing GI first is a good idea.

No major differences. Play G1 first, you will have at least as fantastic of a time with it as you are currently having with G2... then when you're done, you'll appreciate G2 in a way that only a person can when they've played G1.

Remember, this is not EQ... it's not a race... there's no one to 'beat to the punch' so relax, take your time, and suck in the gaming goodness.

I remember G1 being pretty tough at the early levels. But this memory is skewed somewhat by the learning curve I went through getting used to the controls. So if you are somewhat used to how to fight because of your experience with G2, you may have less of a problem when you set out in G1 simply because you are already familiar with how fighting works.

However, you start out as a weakling, so don't expect to waltz through anything simply because you've got the controls down.

Yes. Plus the controls are worse (but similar). Just donīt fight humans before you have an armour, a decent weapon and some strength.
