As a huge fan of the ultima underworld games I'm really looking forward to ARX with very high expectation I'm afraid. Hope they can pull it through.

Yes, I read your preview, and I have followed the game myself very close. The ARX crew is not only trying to ride on the succes of the underworld, they really seems to be great fans of these two underworld pearls, and instead of waiting for others to make a game like those, they started it them self.
Refering to the some of the interviews the ARX crew have made, I feel that they absolutely know what maked the underworlds a huge succes, so I'm very comfortable with there end result.

At least we won't have to wait for this one to be published in German first. I was always a big fan of the Ultima games, but strangly enough I never played the Underworld games. Are they worth a go back to the classics to play?

Most certainly so - although it's not easy to get them running in Windows (Sound driver). The graphics are really dated now, but the atmosphere is still one of the best so far...

Are you kidding, I am running Win ME. Microsoft has made it easier than ever to get your legacy programs running in an advanced multi-tasking environment! Sound, I don't need no steenkin sound!

Here's a link to a guide on how to make them running under Windows:

Thats what I like to see. Someone coming up with answers, unlike some people who just come up with problems! "No sound, windows problems". Too bad they didn't throw the two Underworld games in with Ultima 9 dragon edition. They threw every other ultima in there!

Oh wow!! I just learned about Arx! I can't believe it's an Ultima remake. This is so cool
Ultima 4 was my first rpg ever and that's what got me hooked on the genre.
Come to think about it, I think I've checked out a tech-demo about a year ago that was a remake of U1.
Perhaps it was the predecessor of Arx?

Glad to see that things are going the right way with it, and I can't wait to get my hands on a playable demo

Nope. The U1 techdemo is a different thing. Arx is a game on its own. BTW, there are several remakes of Ultimas in the works now. U1, U5, a project to make U7 run under windows, U6 redone with the Dungeon Siege engine. Some of them will probably never see the light of life, but at least the U7 project is already working...

I just want to point out, for those not knowing the Ultima underworld games. They are quite different from the original Ultima I-IX games. No comparisons are adequate.
In the underworld games you control one character in first person view (Actually the first first person 3D game ever, even before "Wolfenstein"). Combat is very intensive realtime action, with full weapon swing control!
The first person 3D view and the very good dungeon designs, gives the gamer an ultimate experience with lot of atmosphere.
Other good and bad things can be said about the Underworld games, but the ones mentioned, is for me the most important!

Well, apart from the nasty inventory bug in UW1 there is nothing negative to be said about these two jewels!!! Both belong into the all time top 10!!!

No question about it. Speaking from my personal point of view, Ultima Underworld I is the best game I've ever played. Period. It was my first crpg, even though at that time I had no idea what a crpg was. I didn't even know games were separated into categories. That game was the direct cause I became hooked forever (I hope) in crpg's. The thought of a new Underworld-like game is so much attractive to me, I'm placing Arx Fatalis at the very top of my wish list, which is: Morrowind,Dungeon Siege,Might & Magic IX, Gothic, Pool of RadianceII, Wizardry 8
