Great game!
   

This game is quirky and not easy to categorize, has a few problems but overall is VERY fun and satisfying.

I am reccomending this game to all my friends.

It is a 2d space combat/trading sim, a text adventure game, a sci-fi RPG, and a RTS rolled into one.

Some of the translation is very bad which began to annoy me, but then I simply looked at it a different way...
They were ALIEN SPECIES talking to me so naturally there would be errors in translation right?

Once I looked at it that way I enjoyed the 'engrish' mistakes instead of being bothered by it.

A few tips:

1)In space on the minimap of the current system colored planets are inhabited (you can land there and trade/refuel/get missions etc) and brown planets are barren (you can land there and probe for salvage)

2)On the galaxy map when you click on another system it shows a line to the targeted system with a number. Note this is the LIGHT YEARS distance(your engine must be able to reach that far) and not the NUMBER OF DAYS to get there. I was confused by this when taking time restricted missions.

3)There are 5 basic types of mission: Delivery, Kill task, Escort, Patrol, Quest.
Deliveries give the best money for time spent but are boring. Leave your weapons behind so you can travel faster.
Kill tasks are tough at first because you aren't very powerful but become easier with time. I think they might give you negative faction with the race of the ship you are killing though.
Escort missions seem to involve 1 or 2 fights and be careful because the ship you are escorting often jumps around a few systems. Read the name and be sure you are following the right ship.
Patrols are in one system and often involve 1 or more fights. Watch your radar for other ships and check for pirates or corsairs to start shooting on civilians. Go stop them quick. In the beginning your radar range will be really small so fly all over the system to spot trouble.
Note that for both Escort (and Patrol) missions you succeed as long as your Escort (or the Civilian ships) are not destroyed before the end date of the mission. Theoretically you can accept the mission then run off and do whatever and still succeed though I've only had that happen once, every other time my escort got killed.
Quests take the longest but are possibly the most fun part of the entire game.
I've played many of the quests over and over just to see the different results. Occasionally vital game info can be obtained from quests too.

CHEATS!
Space Rangers 1 had cheats and Space Rangers 2 has the same ones.
I usually don't cheat in games but I was having a real hard time getting going.
It seemed I could never make enough money to keep my equipment repaired.
I searched the net for some tips on the best way to survive the early game and found out about the cheat codes.
It seems that there is a cheat system in the game that is actually a PART of the game itself.
In other words you are SUPPOSED to use these cheats.
Here's how it works.
For every day that passes in the game 1 cheat point is added.
When you type in the appropriate cheat code you get your cheat reward and the cheat total is reset back to zero. There is no sense in waiting 100 days to type in a cheat code that costs 30 points as you won't get the other 70.
The only way I know of to see your cheat point total is to type in a cheat code.
If you have enough points you'll get the reward. If not it will tell you how many you have and how many days you must wait to use that cheat.
I periodically type in the highest point cheat (300) to check my level.

I would normally not post a cheat code but as it is part of the game here they are:
For all codes you hold Shift + Control, then type

bigmoney (at any planet's equipment screen) gain 10,000 credits. Costs ?? points. Note your current total is SET to 10,000 so spend all your money before using this cheat.
hugemoney (at any planet's equipment screen) gain 100,000 credits. Costs 300 points. Note your current total is SET to 100,000 so spend all your money before using this cheat.
repair (fly into the sun and get full repair of onboard items) Costs 40 points. I don't see much sense in this till way late in the game when you have top equipment which costs 60,000+ to repair after fights.
boom(in hyperspace destroys all enemies unless the big boss Keller is in there) Costs 30 points.
nextrank(in military base get next rank.) Costs 90 points.
rangerpoints(In ranger station gain 1000 ranger points) Costs 150 points.
packing(in space reduces the weight of equipped standard items by half. Note it does not affect cargo or the 4 non-standard slots) Costs 300 points and I love this one.
rndbase(on a planet, a random base forms in the current system as long as there are less than 3 already.) Costs 30 points. Useful for setting up your own little system to play in.

Some tips:
I first started by selling all my equipment except my engine, fuel tank, and radar (needed items). I took delivery missions only (refuse all others or go to other planets till you get delivery ones) I would periodically attempt the hugemoney cheat to check my current cheatpoint total.
When it got near 300 I would go spend all my money on high priced items such as drugs or luxury items. Then I used the hugemoney cheat and got 100k. I continued taking delivery missions and bought drugs or luxuries when they were cheap (2 or 3 thumbs up symbols on the LEFT(sellers) side of the trade screen) I tried keeping 20k on me at all times for repairs from being attacked while travelling. Oh! Also be sure to save the game BEFORE accepting any mission. Save the game, check the planet the mission is to and make sure they are not HOSTILE to you or you will be arrested when you go there (or you can talk to the hostile ships near the planet and pay them off)
When cheatpoints near 300 once again spend your money on drugs/luxuries and run the cheat. Repeat till you've got about 300-500 luxuries and 100-300 drugs. Set yourself up a place to keep all this. I chose the Ranger station in Sun system as I chose Human.
NOW phase 2!
Use that hugemoney cheat one last time.
Grab as much luxuries as you can hold and go to the nearest business center. Pay for a business report both locally and distant and look for a planet paying a lot for luxuries. Go to different business centers if needed. Once you find one sell ALL the luxuries there.
The drugs you can just carry with you after that and sell them wherever it shows 2 or 3 thumbs up (on the right(your) side of the trade screen) Don't sell drugs if its illegal there as it will give you a bad rep.
Now you should have about 1 million credits.
Save and search. Go search every planet in your current system for a PERFECT HULL. That means no shaded in areas. You can place things in all available slots. Look for one with a hull above 600, and one with a cladding of 15 or better. I found hulls that met this for 400k, 700k, 900k,1200k.
After you've searched one system RELOAD YOUR SAVE and start over at a different system. Here's why: as you travel you spend money on repairs. Equipment takes damage with time and from attacks. If you searched every system in turn you'd spend a fortune by the time you found your perfect hull. By reloading the save and checking different systems you save a lot of money.
Now after you buy the hull use the same method to get another million.
Save and search for the best equipment to fill each slot in your ship. For example I have a bot that repairs 60 point cladding, a 500 gripper, a 45% damage reducer, a 4500 range scanner.

Now you can fight or trade with the big boys.
