As a female gamer myself, this article/op-ed piece interested me quite a bit. In it, bapenguin interviews one of the leaders of the infamous "girl guild", PMS. Here's where the interview begins:
I was introduced to a few girls from the PMS Clan at a recent press event in NYC for the Xbox 360. After talking with them for a bit, I came to realize these girls wanted the same things from games I wanted. Most of the women in my life have never been gamers, my sister always played Mario and Sonic and similar adventure type titles growing up. My wife, she dabbled here and there but most games don’t hold her interest for very long. So for me personally, it was interesting to meet real hardcore girl gamers. I asked V3NUS from PMS, “What kind of games do you girls like to play?” Her response shocked me, “Any game that has guns in it.” Guys, we’ve all been there. It’s a Friday night; the guys are all hanging out, playing games talking drinking and having a good time. And there’s the one guys wife or girlfriend that’s there playing along with you. And you’ve either said it, or you’ve thought it: “Your wife/girlfriend is so cool that she plays video games with you.”

So with all this recent interest and media exposure lately, I wanted to dig a little deeper. I got to chat it up with Amber, AKA AthenaTwin from the PMS Clan to get the details.
You can read the rest of the interview at Evil Avatar.

The only problem with clan PMS is that they won't play PC FPS's because they lack the KB+Mouse skills (ie: the REAL Shooter skill) to compete with the "big dogs". This isn't sexist, it's fact. They've been called out numerous times on their web boards by people challenging them to Quake 3, Counter Strike, and UT2004, but they always decline.

Anyone, even little kids, can pick up a controller and play a game...but it takes true talent and skill to compete in an online arena with a KB+Mouse setup. Because of their cowardice, I've never had any respect for these ladies.

I was with a woman for four years who was a big gamer. She only played RPGs though. Elder Scrolls especially. It was nice to walk into a mall with your woman and instead of being dragged to JC Penny, you both made a mad dash towards Electronics boutique.

Boy, I hear you. Luckily for me, my husband is a huge FPS fan and I'm the RPGer so we are just like you....except we skip the mall all together and go to Fry's Electronics and wave goodbye to one another. We meet back an hour or so later and add up the damage.

Personally, I wonder why the so-called (pure) girl clans seem to grab so much attention, though in this case I'll make an exception... well, you see, I couldn't play MP console shooters if my life depended on it - I'm far too clumsy for the controls. IMO they are fine for adventures and RPGs, but I have a really hard time with most console shooters.
Mouse and keyboard, on the other hand, now that's a different story. I played shooters online for quite some years (UT, CS, DoD, BF and RO, for example), and I'm still part of a LAN-party-only clan (though our main focus nowadays is on BF2). I may not be our best scorer, but I accredit this to age and not to gender (right, I'm female... one third of our clan is, our best scorer included). It's just that my reflexes aren't what they used to be when Quakeworld TF was fresh, while our best girl still is a young puppy .

Luckily my hubby likes shooters, too... he never was a fanatic like I was, but still, it's fun when you can play side by side (or better yet, against each other when training - we're in the same clan). His regular gaming focus actually is on sport titles while I'm the fighting game/adventure/RPG type... needless to say we might spend hours in the games department of any electronics store... if we didn't already own such an ominous joint .

I have far more trouble using a controller for FPS.

In my opinion, console shooters are far harder to control movement, aim, and bust out different weapons depending on the situation than PC.

I never played computer games becasue I much prefer to lay down and relax when I play. I definatly give kudos to the PC gamers out there who sit up the entire time in a chair...butI beg to differ thatan random newb can pick up a controler and do well.

P.S.The reason we can not get an PC matcheson is becasue we do not have aset PC team. Leading a competitve female group is hard work, and building one is even harder. We have yet to find a leader in the PC relm who can build what we have built on console. Any PC girls interested in leading a PC team, let me know..the is allot of intrest for PMS PC!

P.S.S. Nice site
