Deus Ex: Invisible War - Dev Diary @ IGN

PC.IGN has a dev diary with contributions from Chris Carollo and a significantly longer one from Warren Spector. Spector's diary is a post-mortem on DX:IW with Warren sticking to his guns and saying they made the game they wanted to make regardless of platform:
Another aspect of the Invisible War UI that's met with mixed response is the SHAPE of it! (Who'd have thought anyone would care? I'm truly amazed.) Personally, I love our circular HUD -- it's frighteningly close to the HUD I envisioned for the first game (which was conceived as a PC game from the get-go). Way back then, I wanted the player's HUD to look as if it were mapped on the player's eyeball. I thought that would be unbelievably cool, very "nanotech" and unlike anything else anyone had seen. (Obviously, I failed to communicate what I wanted to the DX team, because we ended up with a conventional, rectangle dominated HUD!) The fact that a circular HUD didn't match the shape of a monitor screen or that it would "eat up screen real estate" didn't occur to me and, in practice, in Invisible War, doesn't bother me, especially given that you can adjust the opacity down to nothing. I love our circular HUD. However, in response to comments from some PC players, we're looking into a patch that will move the UI elements all the way to the outer edges of the screen, to free up some space in the center of the screen, where most of the action is.
I find it hard to believe someone as experienced as Spector doesn't think the shape of the UI might be important.

This is the interview that finished off any interest I had in the PC version. The game should be released here today, and until I read that I was very tempted to buy it. But it's X-Boxification has been totally confirmed.

'Basically, developing a single game for PC and console meant designing maps to meet the more restrictive platform -- that is to say, the Xbox. Powerful a piece of hardware as it is, the Xbox has only 64megs of RAM, putting some significant constraints on map size, most notably, which means the PC version probably has more map loads than it might if we hadn't concerned ourselves with the Xbox (or if we'd been willing to create, tune and debug two radically different games). '

Pathetic. Didn't stop Morrowind getting released on X-Box. If we must be given tiny maps, why are the loading times so long . KOTOR is almost instantaneous. Wouldn't it be funny if Deus Ex 2 was a total flop on the X-Box, what would they then.

Hehe, check this out: http://66.193.119.177/index.php?showtopic=206381&st=110
(same topic further down). A little parody with Ion Storm doing Chess 2.

And the image someone (John P.) has in his sig:

*sniff*

While looking through DX2's .ini-files to find the magic option that makes it run with more than 5fps @ 800x600 on my GF4 (to no avail of course), I noticed that the engine will be the same for Thief III. I guess it's time to start hating Thief III right now, so that it won't come as another huge disappointment...

After this sorry demo if DX2 I immediately was afraid Thief 3 would be a simplistic console title as well.

Another icon bites the big 1. As I said before "a dev is only as good as their last project". I read the interview and what Spector said was simply a cop-out.As far as I'm concerned he can fulfill his wish and develope games exclusively for consoles from now on.I hope in your case that "Thief 3" won't follow the same route but I have my doubts.
