New to MMORPG - Can Someone Recommend One?

Hi,

I'm currently playing WC3 on bnet at the moment and find it much more exciting than playing against the AI. However, I've always been an RPG fan and am looking for a good MMORPG. I've done a search and there are hundreds of them! Which one should I go for?

Here are the prerequisites:
- NO monthly fee. Hey, I can barely afford to buy the damn game let alone pay an ongoing fee.
- HUGE endless world to explore
- Nice graphics

Ok, that's all I know so I can't ask for anything else.

The ones I'm currently looking at are NeverWinter Nights, Dark Age of Camelot and Asheron's Call.

Can somone please tell which ones are good and why?

TIA.

Well the "no monthly fee" narrows your choices down rather quickly.
Daoc & AC both offer 1 month free but then require monthly payments to continue playing.
You really can't go wrong with NWN since there's so much to do..sp,free mp,new modules, etc. and it's probably the closest rp experience your going to find in a multiplayer game.

Uh...

You want no monthly fees? Then why look at Dark age of Camelot and Asheron's Call?
NWN isn't an MMORPG. It doesn't have a huge world, and graphic is mediocre.

In fact, I believe you'll spend some time looking. As far as I know there are NO MMORPGS with the things you want/don't want.

I recommend EverQuest, however, and it too gives a free month.

You will have serious problems finding a free MMORPG with nice graphics and huge world to explore.

As previous posters said, Asheron's Call and Dark Age of Camelot do have a monthly fee (9.95$ for AC, 12.95 for DAoC if I remember right).

I do not really want to give the expression that I like the monthly fees but I have to say that keeping up a large MMORPG with thousands of players (MMO means MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER ONLINE) is costy. They need the monthly fees for several reasons: network costs, game support functionality/staff, game updates and content updates etc.

I know it sounds unfair but thats how it is.

There are some free games though. I haven't tested them out so I can't really say how they are. Check:

Planetshift

Also check my sticky MMORPG post that is in the top of this forum.

Also browse through this post on Ultima 1 remake boards: Free MMORPG's?

Have fun

As previously mentioned by everyone else, you'Re liste doesn't really have a point since most if not all MMORPGs with at least decent graphics have a monthly fee attached to them.

NWN is possibly your only choice, although it is NOT a MASSIVELY Multiplayer game. The most who can play on a single server is 64 if memory serves. Also, I don't think you will ever find a HUGE endless world to explore in NWN since areas have to be handcrafted one after the other by module makers and... well I don't know of any massive worlds that have been mad in NWN...

As for NWN having mediocre graphics, thats highly debatable...

You saying I exagerated? Well, maybe, it's all in taste.

Nope, didn't say you exagerated, I said it's debatable. I myself certainly don't agree in saying that NWN's graphic are mediocre. They might not be Morrowind's calliber, but they certainly do the job, and, in my opinion, far from mediocre. This is mediocre Graphics:

... would you say that NWN compares to this?

I recommend Zombiemud. It offers everything the current mmorpgs can offer and doesnt cost anything. Also the graphs are good if you close your eyes and think of fluffy kitties.

If youre onto weirds stuff please try Krabbitworld.[/list]

No, that's bad graphics.
Seriously almost every fps released this year has better graphics. Even older ones. Even some RTS games have better graphics.

Seriously, the inventory looks like it was drawn by a Diablo 2 playing 8-year-old with some WICKED color crayons!

Well, Hexy, I won't further argue with you here because it's mainly a question of taste, as you first said. But quite honestly comparing NWN's graphics with FPS graphics is unfair. Except for Morrowind, which CRPG have you played lately that had graphics comparable with those of an FPS? Now I'm not saying NWN's graphics are the best of them all out there, far from it. But to say they are mediocre is pushing it slightly too far imo. You might say the inventory graphics are childish (it's your opinion, and I'll respect it), but they work and they serve their purpose. I don't want to sound like a fanboi or anything. NWN has its share of flaws, and again I'm not syaing their graphics are the best in any RPG. Anyway, that's all I have to say about that
