I purchased a Logitech track ball with the mousewheel recently and it works great in Gothic; it's much better than a mouse.

The model where you use your thumb is best IMHO.

The track ball lets you easily turn and look around without scooting a mouse all over the place. The mousewheel lets you zoom in and out easily. I have the alternate key setup and I move around very well with the QWEASD keys for the left hand and the mouse for the right.

Zooming out is great for a fight since you can see all around you. The caveat is that your point of view may be blocked by something behind you and then you can't see anything.
