SS2 ... Yeaarrrrgh

Anyone have any gameplay tips for this thing? I'm getting butchered. Hacking 2 is good and that's about all I've figured. I've read a few tip sites but they haven't been helpful at all, so I'll just ask people around here who have beaten it (without cheating)... how did you survive? I remapped to standard FPS and that's helped a little bit...

WSAD is the only sensible keyboard layout (in my opinion), anyway . Tips? If you're playing as a techie, you need to be fast and stealthy. Be silent, avoid combat if possible. Use your gun mainly to shoot cameras you can't hack. What is more - hack, hack, hack. Hack into every hackable feature you encounter, it's your strength. Yes, I know it sounds difficult, but the the techie is basically not a fighter but a thief class, to talk fantasy, so play him as one. If you have to fight, keep on moving. And keep your eyes peeled. The beginning was a bit tough, especially when I encountered my first nurse, but if you upgrade your tech skills whenever you can, you should be fine.
As a fighter - well - you also might want to adopt a stealth approach, it's quite healthy not to run headlong into security features. I haaven't played as a psi guy, though, but I know you can turn invisible... so overall it's more of a stealth game.

The System Shock series is one of the best ever. Stealth is NECESSARY the game is so tough. Shodan is still the best ever villain. Sarevok was a sissy compared to her.

Stealth is good. I try stealth as much as possible. My frist character took the +1 strength, +1 hacking, +2 tech affinity, +1 research approach... and died a lot after a bit. I tried a marine and died a lot. I haven't tried psi, though they look cool.... because rare as medical kits and stims are they seem downright frequent compared to psi stims...

But stealth doesn't seem to be an option, really. I try the (stealthy?) crouch walk like DX... that gets rid of my footsteps, but El Corpso Walko still seem to hone in on me like bears and honey. I hack security stations and crowbar or shoot cameras and turrets while they're offline, no problem... it's the surprise zombie ninja attack (as in there's no warning or footsteps... I'm just clubbed to death) that gets me. And even they're not as bad as the wretched exploding protocol droids, who you just can't outrun, dodge, and rarely shoot to death (without wasting precious non-respawning AP ammo on a renewable droid resource) before they explode in your face.

Have you installed the patch? If so, skip this paragraph ... If not, then you really need it... the devs admitted that they got the balance wrong shortly after the game was released... the patch allows you to edit some lines in a .cfg file that make (a) bad guys respawn less frequently, and (b) your weapons last longer before wearing out (or you can stop them wearing out at all, if you prefer). These aren't cheats, they're genuine fixes for mistakes in game balance. Oh yeah, and the patch also adds multiplayer co-op.

Don't try to be a jack-of-all-trades, this game is harsh on characters who don't have a strong speciality, so pick the skills you need and focus on them entirely (hint: if you use the patch to lessen weapon degredation, Repair skill becomes less necessary... so does Maintain, but that skill also has some other benefits). I played as a hacker, and found that Hack was (obviously) my no.1 priority, while Standard weapons and Research were pretty important too (Research every monster giblet you find as early as possible, the damage bonus is worthwhile, and will save you lots of ammo). Also get level 1 in Heavy weapons... this will allow you to use the grenade launcher, which has ammo for every conceivable situation (don't be wasteful with your grenades, they're life-savers!)... extra levels in Heavy will improve your grenade damage, but the other heavy weapons are no better than the grenade launcher, so don't worry too much about this. Energy and Exotic weapons are very specialised, so don't spend any points on these skills unless you intend to play the hero and use every weapon in the game (for example, if you chose to only use energy weapons, you'd be hard as nails against robots, but organic bad guys would walk all over you).

Phew... so, for a Hacker... Hack, Standard weapons, Research and at least 1 point in Heavy, they are your top priorities (probably in that order). And stat-wise, Tech is obviously important, but STR (and the OS upgrade that gives you extra inventory slots) is useful for any character since it lets you carry more. I would honestly recommend using the patch to eliminate weapon damage completely (IMO it was an irritation that didn't add any enjoyment to the game), and forgetting about Repair or Maintain unless you have points to spare. Similarly, Modify is a fun skill to have, but it's not really necessary... spend some spare points on it, but don't make it a priority.

I didn't experiment much with Psi characters, but I could see that their required skills are very costly, so you would have even less scope for "extra" skills than normal... plus, a lot of the powers just boost hacker- or fighter-like abilities for limited time periods, and as you said, psi hypos are scarce and psi points don't regenerate naturally, so you don't have a lot of scope for experimenting with your powers (whereas a hacker will collect more than enough nanites to mess around with anything they find)... it just doesn't strike me as being much fun, but that's just my personal taste...

Gah! This post is too long, I guess I ought to do some work Can you guess this is one of my favourite games? Oh yeah... play at night with the lights off, otherwise you're cheating

Dont' know why everyone thinks SS2 is so hard. I found it challenging as a Hacker but not overly hard.

Has anyone ever gotten SS1 to run on a modern computer? I bought it a few years ago but could never get it to run right. Always wanted to go back and play the first one.

That was an excellent post, Piln - I had forgotten a lot of this stuff.

Play with the lights off? The way they sneak up so quickly from behind? Are you mad?

I'm more on the ball today. Not so much stealthier as more conservative with ammo (though my precious armor piercing is out thanks to several annoying maintenace droids in the cargo bays ). Paying a little more attention... leaning, strafing a lot more... etc. Basically I stopped mucking around and slid back into the Deus Ex/Jedi Outcast/Aliens vs Predator vibe.

Still trying my hacker... doing ok for now. I did turn off weapon degradation, but since I rarely use anything but the trusty rusty crowbar it's no big thing. Did let me pound 100 energy worth of laser pistol shots into a maintenance droid without busting a quality 1 laser pistol though...

Heh. Still jump from time to time. This is the only game that has me taking breaks... as well as screaming "#^@&*!&* MONKEY!" periodically whenever a monkey sneak attacks me. You know they're around because they're loud... but they're small and suddenly you've lost half your health to 'kinisis...

Currently at the start of deck three.

I got an updated, enhanced CD version of SS1 that plays on a modern PC, but I haven't tried it since I switched to XP, so I don't know about that.

That's the same one I got. I couldn't get it to run on Win 98 or XP. I kept getting some message about the mouse cursor running out of memory. I tried it in a Windows environment and DOS with no luck. All the systems I tried it on far exceeded the minimum requirements. Maybe I need Win 95?

Just tried on XP. No luck; it ran the intro fine, but when I tried to start a game it crashed out. Try 95 if you have it.
