Good 1st person RPG

Hey! I've been playing Morrowind for a time now, but I'm looking for something new. It seems to me that online RPG's are in the wind, but is there a real alternative to Morrowind for people like me who likes non-online games?

The short answer is "no".

If you want 1st person, there aren't many choices. Wiz8 fits the bill, but it's 1.5 years old. The Might & Magic series is first person, but you've got to go back a few years to get MM6, MM7, or MM8 (the most recent, MM9 is AWFUL).

Those games are party-based with turn-based combat, which would be a change from MW. If you prefer real time combat and enjoy action games, Deus Ex would be a good choice. It's an older title as well. It's a shooter, but there are RPG elements that dramatically alter the way the game plays.

Gothic's over-the-shoulder view might not be too much of a change from MW's 1st person, and that's a wonderful game by all reports.

It depends on what you want/like. Your topic says '1st person', and there are not too many 1st person CRPGs out there, unfortunately. Arx Fatalis is 1st person, no party, and it's pretty good in my book, but it's a classical dungeon crawler a la Ultima Underworld as opposed to the landscape crawler Morrowind. Then there's Wizardry 8, but it's a party builder and has round-based combat.

=EDIT= Well, dte, looks as if we simul-posted. Arx is a definite YES.

Ok. Well I hate to play partybased RPG's, except Baldurs Gate... Morrowind is the perfect game for me, since I play AD&D also. I just love the freedom you get to make your own choices. I recently tried the Mistmare demo. That could be an alternative maybe, but I'm never totally satisfied. Arx Fatalis was OK, but it didn't "get me". Well, well... Thanks for the input. I'm just gonna have to wait till something good comes along.

Since you like single character D&D games, have you considered NWN? It's 3rd person and it's not open-ended like MW, but it might fit the bill for you.

Like Jaz said, right now, there isn't much out there that's similar to MW in the ways you're looking for.

Yeah, I've played NWN. It's a good game, espescially after I found a camera hack that really helped get a better perspective in gameplay.

I really didn't have big hopes about finding a game similar to Morrowind, but I thought maybe... Bloodmoon comes out this summer I believe, so that's probably my best shot anyway. My dreamgame would be Morrowind coupled with 3rd edition AD&D rules.

By the way:
Does anyone know if there is to be a sequel to Vampire the masquerade?

Hmm...

Wizardry 8 is pretty good.
If not, how about Deus Ex and/or the System Shock series?
I mean, sure, they're a bit quake-ish, but they are RPGs and First Person. And, you don't have a party.

Didn't like Wizardry 8. Deus Ex and System Shock are good but a bit old. No offense...

An upcoming game you might want to look into is mistmare.

It is a great deal like NWN.

And Gothic 2 also.

I downloaded the Mistmare demo. The camera was hopeless, but the story is nice.

Gothic 2 looks promising. Thanks

Gothic II is a good game, but not truly first person; it's 3rd person. You have the option to switch views, but unless you hack the game's .ini file you'll revert to 3rd person in combat and dialogue situations.

Ok. 3rd person is allright, but 1st is best. What do you write in the .ini?

You just have to fiddle with a variable - the corresponding entry is there from the start. Here's the gothic.ini entry including comments:

zDontSwitchToThirdPerson=0
; ... enables (1) or disables (0) auto-switching the camera to 3rd person during dialogs, interactions and combat.
; Attention: seriously affects gameplay if setting to "1", as everything can be done in 1st person, untested feature but fun

So you see, the .ini file was written with 'ini-fiddlers' in mind.

Vrolok … I am a big fan of Morrowinds with over 500 hrs play time and I'm also waiting for Bloodmoon to be release.
A few months ago I was looking for a FP RPG as you are. I came across posts like Jaz’s about Gothic. Now it’s my favorite game, at first I didn’t like the third person view or the controls. But after playing Gothic for a couple hours the controls are quite nice, I now prefer the sword play 10X more than Morrowind’s controls.
Come on... Gothic2

Thanks Jaz. I will try it out.

Rafter II: Ok. Cool. I'm looking forward to immerse myself.
