What video card to get for a new computer?

I'm going to build a new computer soon and will be getting a video card for it. My price range is 100-170. What card fits the bill? There are so many different cards. ATI and NVidia are not making it easy either. I think they want you to buy the crap cards thinking your getting a good one. Instead of them just listing them 6800, 6900, 7000 and you knowing that the higher number is better they try to confuse you. Anways, all help is appreciated!

Here you can watch an overview with details from the Radeon 9800 series. There are several of the 9800, each a tad better then the other. Here you see the Radeon 9800Pro with a price range between the $133.00 - $267.51. I suggest you look for a cheaper version of the 9800Pro there, and it will still be remarkable good.

My suggestion is that you try to find a GeForce 6600GT, the performance is roughly the same as a Radeon 9800 Pro, but it can vary from game to game. But it has other advantages, being a more modern card, the most obvious is Shader Model 3.0 support.

Try finding a 6600GT with 256 MB GDDR3 RAM, it's probably the best choice for you. And if you're going for PCI-E instead of AGP (which would be a good choice nowadays), the 9800 Pro is out of the game, since it's AGP-only.

I suggest NVidia 6600GT (or ATi X700?). The 6600 GT is probably better 3D games performer.

We had this discussion before. I donīt think the situation has changed that much in the last 6 months. Maybe you should do a forum search.

A 6600GT is good, but itīs loud and it is (was ?) not as reliable as a Radeon 9800Pro. Make sure you get a 3 year warranty with your card.
The next bigger card could have an even better price/performance ratio. Itīs worth checking out. A 6800LE (was it LE ?) is slightly faster than a 6600GT even in the default configuration. You have a fair chance to enable the disabled features with a simple piece of software. If only half the pipelines arenīt broken and were only disabled due to market demand then you have a nice afterburner for an already fast card.
The equivalent ATI cards are also relatively cheap nowadays, and the new nVidia generation hits the shelves very soon, so think carefully.

Video cards

I've heard rumors of the 6600 card having power demand, fan size/noise and heating issues. Some of those apply to the new 6800 from what I understand? I've been looking into the X800 cards but like one person sorta said they don't support some of the new things that NVidia cards do. Still the X800 seems like a very good card.

Yeah, if you found a X800 Pro that was cheap enough it would really be a great buy.
