the way i see it is that if you want:

to use mostly magic in battle and stay with low str, dxt and fighting skills-> be a mage

to have good armors and weapons earn many gold and have good str, dxt, and fighting skills->be a mercenary

to combine all of the attrubutes in the game (magic, str, dxt, mana, skills ext.) -> be a palpdin

For my opinion t obe a paladin is much better for a magician!

I dont like to fight with my enemies from distance. I like to fight face to face!

i like it more as a mage (especially when i had 200 mana) you rarely get hurt and kill everyone easily (especially the hard opponents: dragons, trolls ext.).

look how easy it is:
trolls-> 2 skeleton summoning spells
black troll-> 3 skeleton summoning spells
drogons-> few fire storms
undead dragon-> 3 death to the undead

Mercenary might have weaker armor and stuff, but as a mercenary, you can do whatever the fuck you want.
Example: Your mission: Get the rent from farmer Sekob. He refuses to pay. Now this is the point where it's cool to be mercenary; you get no problem at all if you beat Sekob up and steal the rent.
Also, you don't get gay penalties like in the city or in the monastry.
Not to forget you can get rich easily, and it's fun dueling the other mercenaries.

Being a ranger isn't a class, but a skill template. If you use your learning points for dexterity, longbows and animal skinning, you can call yourself a ranger.

For me it's like this:

Militia/Paladin: the easiest, nice armor in the beginning as well as in the end. Very nice runes en weapons.
Mercenary/Dragonhunter: a little harder but more fun to play than the Paladin and the armor just looks better.
Mage: hard in the first chapter, but way overpowered in chapter 4 and later.
