Lutero's weapons books bug?

I beat up Lutero (the guy in the upper quarter who sells the books that increase your weapons skill) to take his books. Then because I forgot to save after I had to reload my game and do it again. Now when I knock him down he doesn't have the books on him. In fact he's got a completely different inventory. If I ask to see his wares they're there, but when I knock him down (at night) they're not. What's up? I think the game thinks I've taken them even though I reloaded a game. Or does he sometimes hide them somewhere?

Are you sure you've reloaded a correct savegame, because it really looks like you've beaten him already.
