HAL was the name of the 'Super' computer in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey that ran amok and took over the ship after it realized it could think for itself, etc etc

Actually Shrapnel´s info seems correct.
2001 is a movie one has to watch at least once. Like most movies by Stanley Kubrick 2001 isn´t really entertaining, but it has some unforgettable moments.

not everyone will like that film. i read a comments from reviewer at chicago-sun time remember that more than 20 years ago when attending the premier/screening, one of his friend walk up to him & said "could anybody tell me what in gods name this movie is all about!".

right now i only have a 1.5 cpu 256megs 2800 400mhz rdram and a sb audigy with a g4 mx440
