Sorry about that.
Nor PB nor Jowood want to make Gothic German only. the exact reasons why NotR was never released are known only to the people from Jowood. Something went awfully wrong here, that's for sure.
PB doesn't have anything to do with the release of their games. _________________ "Who are we to call this planet Earth, when it's clearly Ocean."

Then there is nothing we fans can do. I am also guessing whatever that problem is will never be solved and thus NoTR English will never be released. What a shame... What a waste... Plus I had the most disgusting and terrified moment when I had learned that there were many extra stuff in the German version of G1. For instance quest about the shrine in swamp region, the music playing right to the entrance of the Old Castle on the podium, and many more. Good job! Next time remove half of the game in the non-German versions... _________________ Right makes might! |

Only the In Extremo concert was cut due to licensing problems (getting an international license for the music turned out to be far too expensive); there were no additional quests in the original version, or rather, some quests were never finished due to budget cuts. These unfinished quests are unfinished in all versions of the game. The German version doesn't have them, either.
The US version got an additional feature, however... a bikini top for Velaya (plus instructions on how to remove it).
Interestingly enough, the German version of Thief 2 also had additional music not available in the original US version of the game because licensing it for the German version was cheap enough to meet budget limits. _________________ Jaz |

Yeah, if i remember correctly there was music from "Subway to Sally" in Thief2. But i didn't know that they cut'em out in the US version. |

Right, it was 'Accingite vos' by Subway to Sally. They didn't cut it out in the US or UK versions, however - it wasn't in the game in the first place IIRC. It was an exclusive addition to the German version. _________________ Jaz |

The NotR thing is fully understandable really. They had publishing deals with Atari regarding the add-on, but Atari refused to spend money on it. In the end, the deal broke, and JoWood once again had the rights to NotR English version(it was Atari that released Gothic 2 outside of Germany, not JoWood). At that point however, it was already over a year since NotRs' original release and releasing it in Europe would be a failure except to the hardcore fans because there was no "fuzz" around it(no reviews anymore, noone writing about it, no links about it on tons of pages etc).
That's why I believe they will probably release it in the shade of G3 as a build-up to the G3(extra publicity for G3, which is one of JoWoods main games in 2006). They are simply saving it for extra publicity around the English version of G3, instead of releasing at a point where there was no publicity around Gothic at all.
At least that is my theory regarding what happened. I believe only the people at JoWood/Atari really know what happen. |

Are you sure?
I have been told by a German that the shrine in swamp is a part of a quest in German version of G1.
Also what do you have to say about Mud and the guy in swampweed collecting place who talks about his tree minions? Is there anything special or extra about them in the German version? Because I know they are German-related. (Niels Ruf?) _________________ Right makes might! |

If you mean the floating blue thing in the swamp... that's not part of a quest in the German version, either. If it was, it was cut before release.
Mud's face was modelled after Niels Ruf, a (former) German TV host. Otherwise, there's nothing special about Mud (his monologues weren't related to Niels Ruf's shows or some such). Baal Netbek was modelled on a journalist (Joe Nettelbeck) who worked for a German games magazine and who visited the developers at the time the game was still in production. He happened to like the plant models in the game, which is why the NPC Netbek is rambling about flowers and trees all the time... but that's not info you can extract from the game, it's just something you find out when you chat with the 'real Baal Netbek' and the devs . The 'real' Baal Netbek even posted here in the Dot's Gothic forums... once or twice. _________________ Jaz |

@Jaz:
Sorry to doubt about such stuff, but I believe you now...
@Titus:
You mean the gameplay video of G3, where they show the man with dual swords? That was good, the combat system has totally changed ( not good ), but its still pre-alpha... _________________ Right makes might! |

Ok... No problem...
So, what do you think about the gameplay video?

Then stop whining. They don't tell the player in G2, because PB didn't know the answer yet at that time.
Plus if PB didnt know the answer, then who is supposed to know?
You mention plotline errors, but you need to consider one important fact.....PB released Gothic(and did a dam fine job on the game), but when they were MAKING the game, it is unlikely they thought Gothic would be a "series".
PB was a small group making a game on a small budget, and it is highly unlikely they(or any other first time game maker) would create a COMPLETE plotline for a multi-game series BEFORE they even knew if the first game would sell.
I am as big of a Gothic fan as is possible, and SURE I want to know every nuance of gameplay and storyline......but I understand that PB had to do some very creative magic to even make the storyline continue at ALL after G1. Think about it.....the plot in G1 completed.......Hero faces evil, Hero destroys evil..game over. PB found a way to continue, so don't sweat the small details. _________________ Chris: Dad, what's the blow-hole for?
