| My review - Grave of the Fireflies |

Finally, i got my hands on the movie in the form of VCD (inside DVD box). It's translated English version with English subtitle. Too bad though - i have to crank up the audio volume considerably since the sound seem rather low-key or muted. Perhaps i'm too hasty and should keep looking up for DVD version.
This one is good. No, in fact - it's a real gem. The story?, well, i may as well take the synopsis notes at the back of the cover:

In the aftermath of a WWII bombing, two orphaned children struggle to survive in the Japanese countryside. To Seita and his four-year-old sister, the helplessness and indifference of their countrymen is even more painful than the enemey raids. Through desperation, hunger and grief, these children's lives are as heartbreakingly fragile as their spirit and love is inspiring. Grave of the Fireflies is a tale of the true tragedy of war and innocence lost, not only of the abandoned young, but of an entire nation.

The most gripping part, which is also the focus in film are the 4 years girl, Setsuko. You can see her existence from relatively healthy being in the early scenes, to her sufferings and

then tragic death in the end
because of sadness, helplessness, lost, malnutrision, hunger, diseased. Indeed, the director know how to use a fragile character (a child + girl) to induce our sympathy and invoking the feelings of pity or compassion.
Nevertheless, from the perspective of the girl herself, i think, she didn't notice much or aware about the seriousness of their dire situation. Her brother, Seita, did provides as much as comforts he can offer,

eventhough in the end he can't avoid the inevitable, even himself...
The even sadder part, and mostly we know of, is those sufferings of the innocents will always happen in wars. We call it as collateral damage. It happened in the past, and today it still happening in certain parts of the world, and it will still happen again in future...

Yeah, it's one of the best animes ever.
But you really shouldn't spoil stuff like that...

It was an excellent film. It did a great job with metaphor and the visuals were top-notch.
Next time, you might want to put a spoiler warning on it so those who haven't seen it won't have the plot ruined for them.

I loved Grave of the Fireflies also, and I'm not much of an anime fan. I'm not sorry to say that I cried the first time I saw it.
