Invisibility Quest

When you get to the village where everybody is invincible due to a spell cast by a mage living in some fort ruins, after I take the scroll to break the spell for the people there and complete the quest, my luck gets damaged and it reduces from 50 to 7..Why does this happen and is there a way to boost my luck permanently?(not scrolls and spells)..

::SPOILER::
if you chat him up and make him like you some more, then he will give you a ring to protect yourself from this side-effect.

What I'd like to know is why he said it was an accident but in his journal he says he did it deliberately.
