NWN2: J.E. Sawyer takes over as Lead Designer

This comes as a bit of a shock but NWN 2 News is reporting that Ferret Baudoin has left Obsidian and has been replaced as NWN2 Lead Designer by J.E. Sawyer - as Josh confirms here:
Ferret did work at BIS on both Jefferson and Van Buren (The Black Hound and Fallout 3). On F3 he was designing the highly nutty (but cool) Brotherhood of Steel/Circle of Steel stuff.

I'm now the acting lead designer on NWN2.
What is particularly interesting is that Josh had already moved on to another project based on a post he made on the Something Awful forums a few weeks ago under his ropekid alias. We wish Ferret the best of luck in his future endeavours and we'll bring you more details as soon as we have them.

This is very, very shocking. No one saw this coming. There has been complaints about what kind of information we are getting back on NWN2 mostly on "in won't have this".

For this late in the development cycle to lose the lead designer.

This isn't scaring people as much as Ferret's only lead design work so far has been KotOR2 whereas JE Sawyer has FO2 and the IWD's to his credit.

He does have some experience with 3D titles after the fiasco with Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows.

My only concern is that Sawyer is relatively new to the project having joined Obsidian late last year.

There is no release date given for the game but June and September at worst have both been kicked around the net.

I worry about why the project has a new lead designer. Hopefully, it's not some kind of train wreck in the making!

My guess is the announcement that horses won't be in the initial release of NWN2 but the models for horses (And incomplete animations possibly) will be was his first act as lead designer.

It makes sense that he would step down and put his foot down on something that was going too slow that zots could go elsewhere.

He later explained that part of the problem so far has been the conversion from Aurora to Electron; their rebuild of the toolset? graphics engine?

and from it sounds like they were trying to implement the things they were trying to do with Black Shroud aka The Van Buren Project aka BG3. Basically, running, jumping, swimming etc. and they got bogged down.

If this is in fact what's going on, that JE is putting his foot down to get things done in time for release, that's not a bad thing. Of course, if it means making it half finished from what they intentioned and that you can tell, that's not a good thing.
