| Another performance comparison |

Hi, I'm a newbie here, but have done a little comparison with Morrowind's fps performance
I have the following system
P3 1GHz w/ 768 MB RAM
Asus mobo w/ VIA chipset
Windows XP Professional
GeForce2 GTS Pro 64 MB w/ default settings
I saw the following framerates with AI distance at approx 10%, view distance at 50%, and shadows at 10%
In town: 12-25 fps
In buildings: 25+ fps
Outside town: 8-25 fps
I just upgraded to a GeForce4 ti4400 (w/ default settings) and here is what I got (Morrowind settings same as above):
In town: 15-30 fps
In buildings: 30+ fps
Outside town: 12-32 fps
I changed the AI distance to 50%, view distance to 80%, and shadows to 50%. I saw the following with the GeForce4:
In town: 10-25 fps
In buildings: 30+ fps
Outside town: 10-30 fps
These are just estimates, but the GeForce4 improved my fps about 25%. Not as big as I'd hoped for. I guess those saying Morrowind is CPU-intensive are correct.
Of course, visual quality is a lot better with the GeForce4.
I will be upgrading to a AMD XP 2100, Gigabyte mobo, and 512 MB PC2700 ram next week and will post results, if anyone is interested.
Lastly, with the GeForce4, Morrowind didn't crash once after 5 hours of continuous play. The GeForce2 would crash (dump to desktop) about once an hour, mostly when I was around water. FWIW.

I have gone thru a very similar upgrade route. I had an athalon 800 with a Gforce 2 GTS and upgraded all the way to an XP2000 with a Gforce4 Ti 4400 and 512 meg of ram.
I ordered the parts for the new computer before all the ideas in this forum were published for getting better performance. With the safe disc wrapper off I was getting acceptable but less pretty performance on my old system. I possibly would not have ugraged if I had waited but overall I am glad I did.
The upgrade has made the game much prettier and now everything is on max and I am getting better performance but nothing like silky smooth. (I don't have the framerate thing on so I cannot comment on it). The system upgrade has made a game that looked good but was slightly irritating thru performance issues exceptional.
What is interesting is the posts about upping the refresh rate on the monitor and the run in the same resolution as your desktop also seem to have improved the performance of the graphics system. There is something deaply wierd about this graphics engine.
The one performance issue that remains is the walking along for a bit and then suddenly it pauses and then I have teleported a bit and I am walking along again. I think it might be associated with loading new graphic images or stuff turning on as you travel towards it. This is annoying and it would be interesting to find out if there are any fixes for this..
Overall though great game and it is immersive enough for my wife to be seriously annoyed by my constant itching to put another hour in at an inconvenient moment.

Oh I also forgot to mention that the only difference the resolution seems to make is in my ability to read the text. This points to a cpu limited system.

Yes this is by far the wierdest graphic engine i have ever seen. I would just like to know the secret to the systems that run this game flawlessly before i spend tons of money making one game run nicely. But for now it is running pretty descent on my system. |
