DirectX or graphics driver missing file

Hi. I can't get Gothic and Gothic 2 to run anymore. Every time I try to start either I get this message:

"X:XD3D_InitPerDx: Can't create D3DX context! Error: DDERR_UNSUPPORTED"

Last time I played these games (July of last year), they worked fine on the same system, so it's not hardware related. I have all the latest drivers, Windows updates etc. I've tried reinstalling both DirectX 9.0b and 8.1, still no dice. Any ideas?

Well, it seems to just be a driver issue. I solved it by uninstalling the latest drivers and going back to a previous version (Catalyst 3. 8). Don't know about any other versions. So much for having the latest versions of your software.
