|
the hero does have a name because on a number of occasions in gothic 1, when coversing with an NCP he will say, Hero: ''My name is...." NPC: "i dont care about your name" |

I don't see why the German devs would call the hero Dave or Bill. I think Siegfried, Otto or something like that would be more appropriate.

The devs do have a name for him (which is, however, more of a working title and not the character's 'official' name). And it's neither Dave, Bill, Siegfried nor Otto .

I think its very original, in many RPGs your character has to find out about his/her past, but then you already got some information about it. 'Our' hero has a past he remembers but we don't know anything about that except:
-he has been been foun guilty of a crime (therefore he's throws in the colony)
-before that he is held in a prison fore a few months (he tells Kirgo about that?  |

Well planescape torment has 'the nameless one' as the lead character.
They invent some sort of name for him to bs with, but it makes your alignment chaotic to do that.
By the end of the game hes still the nameless one. |

A lot of the names in G2 don't seem very "germanic" to me, or maybe in the german version they were different? i.e. there's an apprentice named Brian, the lord is Andre, there's a peasant named Lucy, etc. A lot of the names are french or italian (Garond, Sylvio), one or two of them seem Asian (Lee??) and some of them have that distinct high-fantasy sound (Coragon, Xardas, Zathras etc.) |

Most of the names have German origin, I live in Norway, and I recognize most of the names(Norwegian is based on German), but they seem to take inspiration from a lot of different places when creating a character/name. This is a good thing, it gives the characters, and the world, a feeling that it is "real".
Also, I would just like to add a couple of names. Diego is the first, and Marcos is the second.. his voice gives me the impression that he's not from Germany or any of the countries near Germany..  |

'Germanic' first names are not very common in Germany - in fact, very few of the younger people have a Germanic name nowadays. Especially in former Eastern Germany Italian and Irish names were rather popular, so you'll meet many, many Enricos, Silvios and Maureens in Germany. It's just the same in the States I guess, or does every U.S. American bear a native/tribal first name?
Ah well, Germans need not be of 'Germanic' stock, anyway (sic). There are Turkish, Kurd, Polish, Yugoslav, Italian, Greek...(continue with as many nationalities as possible) Germans. Half of my ancestors, for example, left Switzerland shortly before 1600 to settle down in Germany, while the rest of my (Prussian) ancestry is (mostly) Polish and French. One of my colleagues, a German, is of African and Chinese stock.
But the abundance of Spanish names in Gothic I struck me as slightly odd as well. In GII, names are far more diverse.
